뽑기

Hello!!

I really love watching 우리 결혼했어요!!

On one episode, during Valentine's Day, Hyungdon and Taeyon go to the park, and
he gives her 뽑기. Is there some romantic notion behind this snack?

Also, they were using needles to carve out shapes from the 뽑기. Is this a normal
game you play with this food?

So, I guess I also want to know:

1) What is 뽑기? Does it taste similar to fortune cookies?
2) Are there special times when you eat it?
3) Are there always shapes impressed onto the 뽑기?

뽑기 is not around so much any more in Korea, but back in the 70s and the 80s, this was like the cheapest type of sweet snack that people could see, make or eat on the street - it's really cheap because it's just made of plain sugar on a plain steel plate. :)

So as to your questions,

1) Does it taste similar to fortune cookies?
- No... they are just made with sugar and some soda power.

- Not really ^^ just anytime. hehe. but people don't usually eat it often. Hehe.

3) Are there always shapes impressed onto them?
- yes, usually. and the 아저씨 selling them would tell kids to try and split the 뽑기 with bare hands and get the shape out of it intact, and if they suceed he wouldn't charge for the 뽑기, but as you can imagine it's extremely difficult. Hehe.

You can still see them around primary school areas. :)
Maybe everyone in the age of 3~40s has the memory of making 뽑기 I guess.
And of course the memory of punishment from their Moms as well because they had burned 국자 or 남비 by making it.

현우씨도 그런 기억 있어요? ㅋㅋㅋ

ㅋㅋ 저는 집에서 만들어 본 기억은 없고, 밖에서 사 먹은 적은 있어요 ㅎㅎㅎ

가끔 먹으면 진짜 맛있는 것 같아요 ㅎㅎㅎ

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever done this successfully... but it's fun to eat when it's warm. I think I'll try to make this at home for fun!

Really? 뽑기 is just sugar? I thought 뽑기 were those pastries that are filled with red bean stuff... kinda like those Japanese ones? What am I thinking of, then? :P

Either way... they look so yummy... anything made on just sugar has gotta be good...! :P

현우씨: 네^^ 맛있었어요... 근데 천원은 좀 비싼 편이 아닐까요? ㅋㅋ Esp when you keep buying more b/c you think you can succeed! ^^

Alexis: Maybe you're referring to 붕어빵? Speaking of which, I just went to a place that served mini nutella filled 붕어빵! ^^

그런데, you know what, in 광주, where I grew up, we used to call it 띠기, not 뽑기 :)

띠기 comes from the verb 떼다 :)

붕어빵 진짜 맛있어요~~~~

there is a place here in nyc (in flushing) that makes fresh 붕어빵 right in front of your eyes. it is amazing! i would go all the way back out there just for that if i had time. ^^

Ah, I miss NY and its wonderful food... it's so much easier finding good Korean food on 32nd or out in Flushing! ^^ And you've even got Kyochon Chicken right in your backyard! Hehe.

That picture recall my memory.^^ :D
:lol: We used to call that "똥과자" which means literally “shit(?) snack” but not badly. Because It has the same color with shit(?) as you can see. Taste is so good. Sweet!!
I have had a special memory of this.
There is some shapes (heart, star, or something) on this snack like stamp.
If you completely carve that shape (the heart) by a small pin, you will get new one for free.(should be patient to succeed it.^^;;;)
(It’s difficult, though. I did succeed few times.)
But it’s old story. I don’t think they do that now. :cry:
