는지 알다/을줄알다 usage

Postby kiowoun.asma_231298 » September 18th, 2016 3:37 pm

안녕하세요! i'm a little confused when using the two endings 는지 알다 and 을줄 알다
1)서울에 어떻게 가는지 알아요?
2)서울에 갈 줄 알아요?
Do they both mean the same thing, if not what is the difference .
Here is the sentence below:
비가 올 줄 알았어요=>i thought it would rain (but it doesn't).
=>i knew it would rain.
plaise how can i know if the speaker is meaning the first translation or the second one?!
Thank you in advance .

Hello,

Thank you for posting. ~는지 알다 is used to ask a general question to get the facts, with no personal opinion included in it. For example:

서울에 어떻게 가는지 알아요? (Do you know how to go to Seoul?)
오늘이 무슨 요일인지 아세요? (Do you know what day of the week it is today?)

In the case of ~줄 알다, it is used when someone has a feeling/hunch about something being done, or would happen, but did not. It can also be used to express that you already knew something would happen/be done. For example:

Used in a negative context (on a sunny day): 비가 올 줄 알았어요... (I thought it would rain but did not) You could use ~는데 instead of ~어요 to stress that something did not happen the way you wanted it to: 비가 올 줄 알았는데...

Used in a positive context (on a rainy day): 비가 올 줄 알았어요. (I thought it would rain and it did).

Hope this was of help. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Best,
Lyn
