Soon Dae Gook

Postby trutherous » December 16th, 2010 6:46 pm

Julia should love this post -- it's got food in it!

순댓국 is kind of a 'meat soup' -- I have eaten Korean food for a long time but never got around to trying this soup until recently. As it turned out, I happened to be eating in the restaurant when a young reporter for Korean Central Daily approached me and asked to take my picture. There is a funny story I have to tell about our initial conversation but I will keep this initial post brief.

About the soup: Soondaegook tasted good but the texture of all those different parts of the pig and the look of it was less than pleasant to me. So I just didn't look at it while I was eating. I suppose it's a little like eating a hotdog --you really don't want to know what's in it.

That is an awesome pic! Very cool!

Our very first trip to Korea in April of 1999 (to get our son and I became a new mom :) ) we were out walking around and a guy waved us into his restaurant. At the time we were complete Korean newbies and fresh off the plane. keke We ended up getting served wang soondae kuk. I remember being a bit grossed out but overall enjoyed the rice, soup and kimchi. Later my Korean friends laughed when they saw the pics of where we ate. I found a blog with pics from the place we at ate: ... eCall=true

Actually after our first trip to Korea, I could barely stand the smell of kimchi but years later I'm addicted to Korean food though I'm still not crazy about soondae.

Hello George & julier,

Postby timandyou » December 17th, 2010 12:45 am

:P :P :P
George, you were even on the national newspaper!!!
However, I do not like the word - "타인종들" at all.
Why didn't say "외국인들" instead...!!???
Anyway...thanks for bringing up one of your Korean memories.

Hello Julier,
Is its name
I see... you became a mom in 1999.
By the way... what's his name?
Thanks for being active in our forum!

Ok here is the fun and funny part:

She (the reporter) came to my table and asked in fluent English if she could take a photograph, I never spoke to her in English, only Korean, and except for a few words she only spoke to me in English. Our conversation:

Excuse me, may I take your picture? (명함을 보여주면서) I work for the Korean Daily?
가자: Wu-what?
Is there something else?
Oh my god -- that was a joke? I was so scared!

After that I permitted her to take my picture and answered a few of her questions about the soup... would I order it again? Oh well :D
