From the KClass Blog

Postby austinfd » March 14th, 2008 11:42 am

In my recent blog entry, I posted a video of one of the boys from the orphanage talking about the puppy giving birth. In case you missed it, here's the video link again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udPWziDvv4k

In the blog entry, I gave you two challenges.

1. How many puppies did he say were being born

2. Can you make a transcript? Even if you're not up to typing the Korean out, you try translating it into English. Translations don't have to be exact..that's usually pretty hard, but give it a whirl and use the spoiler tags so everyone can take a shot!

*let me know if the above YouTube link doesn't work for you.

I originally made it private so I could post it last night before making the blog entry. But I have changed the permissions, I don't know why it isn't playing. Can you see the video on the blog page?

On the blog it says the video is "no longer available."

Sounded very interesting, but a bit beyond my Korean level!

I hope someone of a higher level can help out!

Don't forget there are two challenges! Max, did you hear how many puppies he said were being born?

Check the blog post for some of the vocab I think will help you. Maybe just try to recognize when he uses the word "놓다" or "새끼"

I was hoping this wouldn't be too dificult I think a lot of the grammar has been covered in KClass lessons! Granted, the podcasts are a more controlled environment, but he doesn't say anything too difficult...it's just all in 반말 (informal politeness)!

I was only able to pick out the most basic of words, I guess this is proof that I am not too good at Korean.

I think it's quite funny that whenever you asked the little boy, "Who is Dooley?". He replies "DOOLEY!". Ha ha I really liked the video but I must admit I didn't understand everything...whenever he tells you how many puppies were born it sounded a load of slurring!

I typed out what I heard. I don't know if these are actual words, hehehe.
Feel free to laugh at this. Here goes nothing...

[spoiler]
Boy: 오스틴 진짜 지근 둘리 새끼 하고있어.
Austin: 둘리는 누구니야?
Boy: 둘리? 어..
Austin: 사람인대?
Boy: 아니 공용 둘리!
Austin: 둘리, 설면해줘. 둘리데했어.
Boy: 둘리? 개.
Austin: 개? 강아지인대? 아.
Boy: (something something) 강아지인대. 지건 둘리가 새끼를 여섯마리 나고있어. 여섯마리!
Austin: 둘리 새끼인대. ㅁ, 나이으 이름은 어떻게 되했어?
Boy: 몰라. 아직 안줄했어.

"둘리 had dogs." Who's 둘리? "둘리?" Person? "No, 둘리!" 둘리 (something) to me, (something) 둘리. "둘리? Dog." Dog? Puppy. Ah. "Puppy. 둘리 (something) six dogs. Six! "둘리 dog, hmm, (age?) name how it (was?)? "I don't know. Not yet given."
I know, it's really bad. I'm so embarrassed now.

James...

Thanks for giving it a shot! Don't be embarrassed. I couldn't give a 100% Korean transcript either, because he mumbles a sentense I'm not absolutely sure about..but every time I listen, I get a tiny little bit more. I just thought it would be a fun and relevant practice exercise.

I'll post the real transcript after a few days.

Keep trying!

Alright folks...

I'll give you about 24 more hours to get your transcripts up! (Maybe a little bit more than that for those of you who will see this later due to time zones) Remember...even a rough guess in English is still great practice. I'll even start you off with the first line:

오스틴 찐자 둘리 지금 새끼 낳고 있어!
(Austin Dooley's babies are being born!)

Here are the vocab hints once more:

강아지 - dog (yes, 개 is “dog” but people refer to their pets as 강아지)
새끼 - baby animal
낳다 - to give birth
설명하다 - to explain (in this case, I say “설명 해 줘” (설명 해 주세요)
아직 - not yet
(이름을) 정하다 - to decide on (a name)

OK Here's the Korean:
[spoiler]청훈: 오스틴 찐자 둘리 지금 새끼 낳고 있어...
Austin: 둘리는 누구냐?
청훈: 둘리? 어...
Austin: 사람인데?
청훈: 아기 공룡 둘리!....
Austin: 둘리 설명 해 줘 둘리에 대하서
청훈: 둘리?
Austin: 네
청훈: 개
Austin: 개? 강아지인데?
청훈: 응, 어쨌든 강아지는 지금 둘리가 새끼를 여섯 마리 낳고 있어...여섯 마리!
Austin: 오..둘리 새끼인데! 나이 음 이름은 어떻께 됐어?
청훈: 몰라.. 아직 안 정했어...

* A point about "아기 공룡 둘리" Dooley is a dinosaur cartoon character. The dog is named after it.

This may have been the biggest hurdle. Give a shot at translating it! I'll post that after a few more days.

Wow! I just watched this video (a few times) and well i didn't understand most of it but it's easier while reading the transcript with it. ㅎㅎ, the boy's so excited ^^
I think your korean sounds really good too!

I'll give a try at translating though....with the help of the online korean dictionary  :

[spoiler]청훈: Austin Dooley is really giving birth right now!
Austin: Who is Dooley?
청훈: Dooley? Oh...
Austin: Is it a person?
청훈: Baby dinosaur dooley!....
Austin: Can you eplain why Dooley is regarded as such?
청훈: Dooley?
Austin: Yes
청훈: dog
Austin: Dog? Is a puppy?
청훈: Yes, anyways Dooley gave birth to 6 puppies ...6 puppies!
Austin: Oh...it's Dooley puppies! The age um, what are their names?
청훈: I don't know... I haven't decided on a name yet...

I don't know how i did but that was a lot of fun! I had a lot of trouble with this line though:
어쨌든 강아지는 지금 둘리가 새끼를 여섯 마리 낳고 있어
I translated it word by word and got something like
"anyways puppy now dooley baby animal 6 birth is"

and I wasn't sure how to translate 인데...
