Daum's Road View

Postby hyunwoo » March 3rd, 2009 1:13 am

http://daum.net made something like the Google Street View, and it's called Road View (로드뷰) and it's focused on Korea. And I personally think it's much better than the Street View by Google because the pictures are clearer and also because Google doesn't provide the Street View service for Korea :)

Check it out :)

Wow, those are much higher resolution photos than Google street view. I wonder if they blurred out faces and license plates with an algorithm, or they hired people to do it by hand.

WOW...

I actually remember seeing cars drive around town with cameras attached to the roofs. I guess they were gathering data for this project!

Sounds like they do the blurring manually:

Daum has a team of engineers who blur faces and license plates for its Internet map services. The process is a pure manual effort, as the company has yet to develop a facial-recognition algorithm that could scan faces to blur.

Blurring everything manually must be a lot of work!!!!

Yes, I bet. The Google street view service originally had no blurring at all. It was added after the service had been around for a while, and since the database was so hopelessly large at that point, the blurring was all done automatically. As a result anything that resembles a face (round, light-colored area with some dark spots on it) is blurred out. This includes some text on signs, parts of buildings, and even hubcaps  .
