Original meaning of 가락

Postby SiEd » June 28th, 2008 4:20 am

I was thinking about this the other day: what is the original meaning of 가락? Of course, there are plenty of compounds with which this occurs, e.g. 손가락, 머리가락, 젓가락, 숟가락, and so on. From what I can figure out, it seems that this means 'tool' or 'accessory' or 'lower-order member'. What other 가락 compounds are there? (And there are also 풍물 compositions with 가락 as well, to complicate the picture...)

Generally 가락 means the shape of things that are long and slender.

가락 in 풍물 compositions means "the melody".
