same sentence, different implication?

i have another question.

i would like to know what the implication is when ~하는 거야 instead of 해. for example: 뭐 하는 거야 vs 뭐해. obviously, this is 반말 so it is not respectful, but i'd like to understand the implication behind this sentence. from what i can infer, it seems like "what do you think you're doing?" or "what the heck are you doing?" as opposed to "what are you doing?" i have usually only heard this with a condescending tone, but can this be used in a different way?

another example i've heard this used was in 무슨 소리 하는 거야 which was translated as "what are you saying?" is this a common usage (소리를 하다 for talking)?

뭐 하는 거야? (무엇을 하는 것이야?) or
뭐 하고 있어? (무엇을 하고 있어?) refers to a real curiosity of the speaker.
If you ask someone like this, he/she might let you know what is he/she doing actually.
and if you say this in anger, it would be "what do you think you're doing?" or "what the heck are you doing?"

뭐 해? (무엇을 해?) is used in general term.
Sometimes this could be used as the same meaning with 뭐 하는 거야.
Or you can also use this as "what's up?"


소리를 하다 = 말을 하다 = 얘기를 하다

소리 has a negative nuance of "talking"

무슨 소리 하는거야? means "What are you talking about?"
말도 안 되는 소리 means "It doesn't make sense!"
Literally it means "That is just a sound so that it couldn't be even a word"

무슨 소리 하는거야? = 무슨 소리야?
무슨 소리야? can be used as "What are you talking?" or "What sound is that?"

but you can't say "우리 소리 좀 하자" for the meaning of "Let's talk about something"
우리 말 좀 하자 and 우리 얘기 좀 하자 are okay.
