Why Korean?

Postby the_haunted_boy » February 27th, 2008 2:53 am

There are a lot of people in the world that do not see the Korean language as one of the more mainstream foreign languages to study, yet here you are studying it. I have a question for the non Korean people studying the language, what got you started with studying Korean? Because it is not so mainstream then I am guessing you people all have a story behind it, an inspiration for Korean so to speak.

I wrote about part of the reason I study Korean in my blog (click on my ID to see it). But mainly, I'm just very interested in learning foreign languages, and I have a long history of studying many different ones. Although you might say it would have been better to master a few instead of learning a little of many languages, I'm just following my desires. 8)

I came to Korea as an English teacher. I've always been interested in foreign languages, but never really had the chance/opportunity/motivation to invest the necessary energy into it. But living in Korea was the perfect thing. I would feel really bad if I spent all this time living here, but couldn't speak any of the language....many foreigners leave here like that. I did not want to be one of them!

i like the fact that korean isnt very commercialised!! it seems the whole world is learning english and manderin right now, so i wouldnt feel that special even if i was very literate in them! also, being chinese, people expects me to speak the lauguage (i only speak cantonese) so again nothing special even if i spoke it bbecause no one is going to praise a chinese that speaks manderin haha! unless i was some white guy, il be an instant celebrity in china hey???
