New Hello and question about name

Postby ChiWai » February 15th, 2011 12:07 am

안녕하세요 I am very new to the korean language and to this forum.

If possible I want to use my Chinese name in korean and my name means wisdom in cantonese. In korean it seems to be 지혜; I was wondering if it would seem like an unusual name in Korea and if it is feminine. I also want to know what Left and Right is in Korean too

감사합니다

Edit: Is there a Valentines day in Korea? and How do you say "Happy Valentines Day" & "I like you"

안녕하세요 ChiWai,
This is Tim from KC101.com.
Thanks for the comment!
만나서 반가워요 "nice to meet you, ChiWai"
Yes, you are new but, not any more!!! Please feel free to leave us any comment or question.

Ah~~~ about your name "wisdom"
Yes, you are right. It is 지혜 [ji-hye] "wisdom"
That's a good name! I think many Korean have the same name as well...

about "left and right"...
왼쪽 [oen-tchok] "left"
오른쪽 [o-reun-tchok] "right"

about 'Valentine day"...
Yes, we also have!
해피 발렌타인 데이 [hae-pi bal-len-tain dei] "Happy Valentine day"
너를 좋아해 [neo-reul jo-a-hae] "I like you!"
Okay, that's all for now...
Thanks for the comment, and feel free to talk to us.
cheers,

감사합니다 timandyou

Hahaha 해피 발렌타인 데이 I've heard koreans say this but i didn't really think that was what it was. I like how the korean language borrows from other languages and it really makes it a lot easier learning since i know Chinese and English. I think korean is one of the favorite languages i've learned.
감사합니다

ChiWai you asked us if 지혜 is feminine?
Actually, yes it is. In Korea.
Are you....? :wink:But it doesn't matter it's just the name.
I love the name of 지혜!!

Hello 지혜,
저는 팀 입니다. "I am Tim"
만나서 반가워요~~ ^o^~~
hahaha... a good try on 썬배님.
The right Korean word is 선배님 (썬배님 => 선배님) "one's senior"
Am I your 선배님? 하하하~~ I doubt that!
Anyway... thanks for calling me your 선배님 though...
I think you are trying to say "a teacher"?
선생님 [seon-saeng-nim] "a teacher"

However... please call me just "Tim".
I don't want to be neither 선생님 nor 선배님!!!
I want to be your friend, a Korean friend!
만나서 means "because I met you".

Someone's name + 님 means 'Honorific'. Doesn't it feel like too old for me!?? haha ^o^
Please call me, 팀 "Tim". Thanks,
cheers,
