~세...?

Postby orbiter » December 18th, 2010 12:38 pm

~세
I hear this sentence ending now and then, but I'm not sure if it is only in 사극.

e.g. 그러게 말이세; 아닐세...

What does it mean, and is it still used in modern days??

Tks!

Hi. :-)

It's just an ending meaning as -(이)야.

그러게 말일세 = 그러게 말이야
아닐세 = 아니야

Kinda old feeling though,
it's still in use when someone doesn't want to be rude to the youngers.
For example,
A father-in-law to his Son-in-law.

Have fun studying Korean!
Sean.

Thanks Sean --I was wondering about that as I watch 동이 -- I got the general feeling for it but wondered if there was some nuance I was missing.

I recently started watching 성균관 스캔들 and realised that every other line from 송중기 ends with ~세! Good Korean lesson listening to him :)

"헌데... 영락없는 계집앨세"
"미친놈.. 끝까지 헛소릴세"

:)
