나오다 versus 나다???

Postby Gudrun » September 17th, 2010 9:33 pm

(Another question so soon. But the last answers were great so...)

I'm having trouble getting a good feel when to use 나오다 and when to use 나다.

Example sentence (from a textbook):

벨 소리가 (나와서/나서) 문을 열었어요.

I understand what the sentences means, but the definitiong I get for the 2 different verbs are so close that I really don't know which one fits.

Any advice/help much appreciated!

They are close aren't they?

The bell sounded (out) so I/he/they opened the door. Alt: The door was opened at the sounding of the bell. ~when/because the bell rang (out).
The bell rang *(sounded) so I opened the door. Alt: Because the bell rang (he) opened the door. -or- The door was opened when/because the bell rang. *You can still use 'sounded' but the nuance of 'emanation' is absent from the second sentence. BTW - JFF (Just For Fun) In these examples and so can serve similar purpose - isn't that great!

나오다 -- come out, come forth from, emanate, flow out from
*나다 - (according to your sample sentence) sound, ring
*나다 *also has many other definitions such as: 'happen' 'become' 'appear' 'improve (sickness/situation)' and sometimes 'get' as in 'I got a pimple.'

That's all I can think of now -- waiting for Dr. Sean !woot!

You should choose 나서 in this case.
Because... 벨소리 doesn't come out from anywhere.
It just rings.

> Because the bell rang I opened the door.

> The bell sound came out and opened the door. (The one who opened the door was the bell sound... Awkward)

Hope this helps.

You guys are "ROCK STAR"

One more tip!!
we sometimes use "나오다" for the sound 소리.
For the result of action.(?)

The bell sound came out when I pressed the button.

hm... how about this -
"Tim came out when I pressed the button."
내가 버튼을 눌렀을때 (when I pressed the button) 팀이 나왔다 (Tim came out).
Just like... "The Lamp of Arabian Nights"?? :P
cheers,

Thank George for understanding me about "the missing mistake" ^^.

Be careful.

We only say '나오다(come out)' when the sound is actually coming out from the 'specific object' such as 'radio' or 'speaker'.
We don't use '나오다' for the ring of a 'doorbell' being considered as an ambient sound.
