-하세요?

Postby blackzbrownz5517 » June 30th, 2010 9:33 am

This might be a stupid question to ask

But can anyone tell me when to use 하세요?
Is it different from 해요?
And does 하죠 mean the same?

Sorry for the multiple questions
Thanks.. ^_^

It's a good question, not a stupid one. ;)

하세요 is politer than 해요.
Let me break it down so that you could see the difference.

Those two are from the verb 하다, right?

하 + ㅓ요? = 해요?
하 + 시(honorific suffix) + ㅓ요? = 하세요?

(하 : verb stem /ㅓ요 : interrogative ending in standard politeness level)
You can make sentence be more polite by adding the suffix 시.

하죠?(하+지요?) is like...
....., right?

ex)
오후에 공부하죠?
You study in the afternoon, right?

A few meager examples:

하세요 - a respect form of "doing," may be used as either a question or a command:

공부 하세요? (raised intonation) Are you stdying? (question)
공부하세요. (falling intonation) Please study. (command)

해요 - a polite form of "doing," depending on intonation it can used as a question or to express the action of self/others, and can also be used as an informal imperative:

공부 해요? Are you studying?
공부 해요. I'm studying.
공부 해요. Get busy studying. Do study.
학생들이 공부 해요? Are the students studying? Do the students study?
학생들이 공부 해요. The students are studying. The students study.

하죠 - a contraction of 하지요, can be used as a question or a statement, the statement usage may subtly connotate 'of course I/he/she/they/it do/does:'

미국사람들도 한국말을 공부하죠? Americans also study Korean right?
미국사람들도 한국말을 공부하죠. Americans also study Korean (of course).
