the difference between -고 and (아/어/여)서

Postby kat_g » April 8th, 2010 4:40 pm

Ok so this is from beginners lesson season 2 #16. Is there a difference between -고 and -서 or do you use them in the same way?

for example do 집에 와서 잤어요 and 집에 오고 잤어요 mean the same?

Thanks!

good question

I read '집에 와서 잤어요' - Because/since I came home I slept. I came home therefore I slept.

and '집에 오고 잤어요' - I came home and slept.

I am curious to hear more - perhaps Julia or another kind teacher will enlighten us as to the subtle differences.

I'm wondering if this is also a proper sentence '집에 왔어 잤어요?' if so how would '집에 왔어 잤어요' be different from '집에 와서 잤어요?'

"집에 오고 잤어요" doesn't sound natural. (x)
You can say "집에 온 다음 잤어요."(o)

"집에 와서 잤어요." (o)

"집에 왔어 잤어요?"(X)
"-어", "-요", "-다"......... mean "sentence ending".
So we need to put a period after "왔어" and " 그리고".
:!: "집에 왔어. 그리고 잤어요." (o)
I came home and slept.

:!: "집에 와서 잤어요?"(o)
I slept after I came home.
; In this sentence, this person wants to emphasize "잤다".
