Suggestion for Lesson on Retrospective Tense/Modifiers

Postby sincla » June 1st, 2008 5:40 pm

-더라, -던, -었던, -던데, -더니, -었더니

These verb endings I think are among the hardest things for foreigners (but I can only speak for myself) to wrap their minds around when learning Korean. I don't really get them yet. But until you learn how to use them correctly it seems like your Korean will never sound fully natural.

If at some point you had a lesson to clear up exactly when and how to use these, I think it would be a big help for your intermediate to advanced learners.

The fundamental ending out of all of those is -더. They are combinations of that ending with others that you may better understand.

-더라 = -더 + -라
-던 = -더 + ㄴ
-었던 = -었 + -더 + ㄴ
-던데 = = -더 + -ㄴ데
-었더니 = -었 + -더 + -니

Yeah...my main problem is knowing when to use them appropriately.

For example, I'm describing something that happened in the past. When would I just say 누가 ... 이렇게 했어요. 그래서 나는 .... 했어요. and when would I say, 누가 .... 이렇게 했더니 나는 ...했어요. It still hasn't clicked yet. And for that matter, when would I say -하더니 and not -했더니 and vice versa.

We'll be having a lesson on 더니 very shortly. I think it's Intermediate 23... or 24? Somewhere near there :)

Our next Intermediate Series cover just the ones you mentioned :) Might be a while before they're out though :P
