INTRODUCTION
Gabriella: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
GRAMMAR POINT
Gabriella: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What do you do?” In Korean this is...
Kyejin: 어떤 일을 하고 있습니까? (Eotteon ireul hago itseumnikka?)
Gabriella: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 어떤 (eotteon)
Gabriella: meaning something like “what kind of” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 어떤(eotteon)
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 어떤 (eotteon)
{Pause}
Gabriella: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 일
Gabriella: meaning ‘work’ or ‘job’ in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 일(il)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 일 (il)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어떤 일 (eotteon il)
{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kyejin: 을 (eul)
Gabriella: object-marking particle.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 을(eul)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 을
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어떤 일을 (Eotteon ireul)

Gabriella: the verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 하고 있습니다. (hago itseumnida.)
Gabriella: meaning ‘doing something.’
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 하고 있습니(hago itseumni)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 하고 있습니(hago itseumni)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 4 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어떤 일을 하고 있습니 (Eotteon ireul hago itseumni)
{pause}
Gabriella: And next
Kyejin: 까 (kka)
Gabriella: the question marking particle
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 까(kka)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 까(kka)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어떤 일을 하고 있습니까? (Eotteon ireul hago itseumnikka?)
{pause}
Gabriella: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “What do you do?”
Kyejin: 학생입니다. (Haksaengimnida.)
Gabriella: "I'm a student.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kyejin: (Slow) 학생입니다. (Haksaengimnida.)
