INTRODUCTION
Gabriella: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
GRAMMAR POINT
Gabriella: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Where are you from?” In Korean this is
Kyejin: 어디에서 왔습니까? (Eodieseo watseumnikka?)
Gabriella: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 어디 (eodi)
Gabriella: meaning something like “where” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 어디 (eodi)
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디 (eodi)
{Pause}
Gabriella: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 에서 (eseo)
Gabriella: meaning ‘from’
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 에서 (eseo)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 에서 (eseo)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디에서 (eodieseo)
{pause}
Gabriella: And next
Kyejin: 왔습니 (watseumni)
Gabriella: the verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 왔습니다. (watseumnida.)
Gabriella: which means ‘came.’
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 왔습니(watseumni)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 왔습니(watseumni)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디에서 왔습니 (eodieseo watseumni)
{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kyejin: 까 (kka)
(ka)
Gabriella: question marking particle.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 까(kka)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 까(kka)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디에서 왔습니까? (Eodieseo watseumnikka?)
{pause}
Gabriella: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Where are you from?”
Kyejin: 미국에서 왔습니다. (Migugeseo watseumnida.)
Gabriella: "I'm from the U.S.A." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kyejin: (Slow) 미국에서 왔습니다. (Migugeseo watseumnida.)
{pause}
Gabriella: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kyejin: 미국 (miguk)
Gabriella: which is “the U.S.A.”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 미국(miguk)
Gabriella: Now repeat
Kyejin: 미국(miguk)

Kyejin: (slow) 멕시코(meksiko) (regular) 멕시코(meksiko)
Gabriella: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Mexico.”
