INTRODUCTION
Brandon: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
GRAMMAR POINT
Brandon: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How old are you?” In Korean this is
Kyejin: 몇 살입니까? (Myeot sarimnikka?)
Brandon: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 몇 살 (myeot sal)
Brandon: meaning something like “how old” in English. It literally means ‘how many years.’
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 몇 살 (myeot sal)
Brandon: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 몇 살 (myeot sal)
{Pause}
Brandon: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 입니 (imni)
Brandon: This is the verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 입니다. (imnida.)
Brandon: meaning 'to be.'
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 입니 (imni)
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 몇살 입니 (myeotsal imni)
{pause}
Brandon: And after that
Kyejin: 까 (kka)
Brandon: the question marking particle.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 까 (kka)
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 까 (kka)
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kyejin: 몇 살입니까? (Myeot sarimnikka?)
{pause}
Brandon: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “How old are you?”
Kyejin: 18살입니다. (열여덟살입니다.) ( Yeoryeodeolsarimnida.)
Brandon: "I'm 18 years old.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kyejin: (Slow) 18살입니다. ( Yeoryeodeolsarimnida.)
{pause}
Kyejin: 18살입니다. ( Yeoryeodeolsarimnida.)
Asking women their ages might be considered rude in South Korea, just like in other countries. Please use this question only if necessary.
Brandon: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kyejin: 18살 (yeoryeodeolsal)
Brandon: means 18 years old.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 18살 (yeoryeodeolsal)
Brandon: Now repeat
Kyejin: 18살 (yeoryeodeolsal)
{Pause}
Brandon: And next we have
Kyejin: 입니다 (imnida)
Brandon: the verb meaning 'to be.'
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 입니다 (imnida)
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 입니다 (imnida)
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the speaker say, ‘I'm 18 years old.’ and then repeat.
Kyejin: 18살입니다. (Yeoryeodeolsarimnida.)
{pause}
Brandon: To expand on the pattern, replace ‘18 years old’ with ‘25 years old.’
Kyejin: 25살 (스물다섯살) (seumuldaseot sal)
Brandon: 25 years old
Kyejin: (slow) 25살 (seumuldaseot sal)
(regular) 25살 (seumuldaseot sal)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘25 years old’
Kyejin: 25살입니다. (Seumuldaseotsarimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘18 years old’. Say ‘I'm 25 years old.’
{pause}
Kyejin: 25살입니다. (Seumuldaseotsarimnida.)
Brandon: To use a different phrase, replace ‘25 years old’ with ‘47 years old.’
Kyejin: 47살 (마흔일곱살) (maheunilgopsal)
Brandon: 47 years old
Kyejin: (slow) 47살 (maheunilgopsal)
(regular) 47살 (maheunilgopsal)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘47 years old’
Kyejin: 47살입니다. (Maheunilgopsalimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘25 years old’ with ‘47 years old.’ Say ‘I'm 47 years old.’
{pause}
Kyejin: 47살입니다. (Maheunilgopsalimnida.)
Brandon: To expand on this pattern, replace ‘47 years old’ with ‘50 years old.’
Kyejin: 50살 (쉰살) (swinsal)
Brandon: 50 years old
Kyejin: (slow) 50살 (swinsal)
(regular) 50살 (swinsal)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘50 years old’
Kyejin: 50살입니다. (Swinsal sarimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘47 years old’ with ‘50 years old’. Say ‘I'm 50 years old.’
{pause}
Kyejin: 50살입니다. (Swinsal sarimnida.)
QUIZ
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting South Korea and someone asks you how old you are. You are 18 years old. Respond to the question.
Kyejin: 몇 살입니까? (Myeot sarimnikka?)
(five seconds) 18살입니다.
Brandon: Imagine you are 25 years old. Respond to the question.
Kyejin: 몇 살입니까? (Myeot sarimnikka?)
(five seconds) 25살입니다. (Seumuldaseotsarimnida.)
Brandon: Now imagine you are 47 years old. Answer the speaker's question.
Kyejin: 몇 살입니까? (Myeot sarimnikka?)
