Welcome to Three Step Korean Practice by KoreanClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to talk about two events happening in sequence. |
Let’s look at the main dialogue. |
화분이 깨졌네. 무슨 일이야? |
Hwabuni kkaejyeonne. Museun iriya? |
The flowerpot is broken. What happened? |
바람 때문인 것 같아요. 아침에 창문을 열었을 때 바람이 많이 불었어요. |

I think it was because of the wind. When I opened the window in the morning, it was really windy. |
그런데 점심때까지는 괜찮았어. (Geureonde jeomsimttaekkajineun gwaenchanasseo.) |
죄송해요. 저인 것 같아요. 학원에 늦어서 급하게 출발할 때 무언가 깨지는 소리를 들었어요. (Joesonghaeyo. Jeoin geot gatayo. Hagwone neujeoseo geuphage chulbalhal ttae mueonga kkaejineun sorireul deureosseoyo.) |
There are two sentences here that describe events happening in sequence. |
The first one is |
아침에 창문을 열었을 때 바람이 많이 불었어요.When I opened the window in the morning, it was really windy. |
and the second one is |
학원에 늦어서 급하게 출발할 때 무언가 깨지는 소리를 들었어요. I was late for my class and left in a hurry when I heard something break. |
In both sentences, we used "ㄹ(을) 때" to show the timing of two events. But here, we’re using it to describe a sequence—one thing happens, then another thing happens. |
You can use "ㄹ(을) 때" with a verb stem to say "when [someone] does something. |
If the action happened in the past, we use the past tense + "을 때" to show that another event came after it. |
Sometimes, ‘ㄹ(을) 때’ shows that two things happen at the same time, like listening to music while studying. |
Other times, it shows a sequence, like opening a fridge and then realizing there’s nothing to eat. |
Let’s practice how to use this grammar to show sequence more in this lesson. |
