Welcome to Three Step Korean Practice by KoreanClass101.com. In this lesson, you’ll practice how to report your thoughts and what others say using the ending 다고.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation about a movie.
저도 재미있었어요. 저는 남주인공이 참 잘생겼다고 생각했어요. (Jeodo jaemiisseosseoyo. Jeoneun namjuingongi cham jalsaenggyeottago saenggakaesseoyo.)
I also enjoyed it. I thought the male lead was really handsome.
하하! 그렇구나. (Haha! Geureokuna.)
Haha! I see.
In the first line, the person says 저는 남주인공이 참 잘생겼다고 생각했어요 (Jeoneun namjuingongi cham jalsaenggyeottago saenggakaesseoyo). The word 잘생겼다고 (jalsaenggyeottago) is a conjugation of an adjective, and so it uses the STEM-다고 ending. In Korean, reported thoughts and statements use different endings depending on whether the word is a verb, adjective, or noun.
Verb stems that end in a vowel are conjugated with -ㄴ다고 (-ndago).
Verb stems that end in a consonant are conjugated with -는다고 (-neundago).
Adjectives are always conjugated with -다고 (-dago).
Nouns that end in a vowel are conjugated with -라고 (rago).
Nouns that end in a consonant are conjugated with -이라고 (irago).
