Lesson Transcript

Let's look at the sentence pattern.
This pattern is the structure that all of our examples will follow.
NOUN에 비해서 SUBJECT이/가 (더/덜) ADJECTIVE.
NOUN-e bi-hae-seo SUBJECT-i/ga (deo/deol) ADJECTIVE.
Compared to NOUN, SUBJECT is more/less ADJECTIVE.
NOUN에 비해서 means "compared to NOUN."
에 비해서 (e bihaeseo) attaches to a noun to show what you're comparing something to.
After that is SUBJECT이/가, which is the subject of the sentence.
Use 이 (i) when the subject ends in a consonant, and 가 (ga) when it ends in a vowel.
The subject markers are optional, and don't need to be included when the subject is clear.
Then comes another optional part: 더 (deo) or 덜 (deol).
더 means "more" and 덜 means "less." This part emphasizes the comparison, but it's not always necessary—sometimes the adjective itself carries the comparative meaning.
And last is the ADJECTIVE, which describes how the subject compares to the noun.
Let’s see how a line from the dialogue follows this pattern.
다른 펜션들에 비해서 가격이 저렴해요. (Dareun pensyeondeure bihaeseo gagyeogi jeoryeomhaeyo.)
'It's cheaper compared to others.'
다른 펜션들에 비해서 means "compared to other pensions."
다른 (dareun) means "other," 펜션들 (pensyeondeul) means "pensions" in plural, and 에 비해서 (e bihaeseo) marks this phrase as the comparison point.
가격이 is the subject.
가격 (gagyeok) means "price," and since it ends in a consonant, it takes 이 (i) as the subject marker.
저렴해요 is the adjective, meaning "is inexpensive" or "is cheap."
Even though the word 더 ("more") doesn’t appear, the comparative meaning is still there because 저렴해요 implies “is cheaper” in this context.
So, 다른 펜션들에 비해서 가격이 저렴해요 translates to:
"It’s cheaper compared to other pensions."
Now let's look at some speaking examples.
한국어는 영어에 비해서 쉬워요. (Hangugeoneun yeongeoe bihaeseo swiwoyo.)
Korean is easier compared to English.
Can you see how the pattern applies here?
Let's break it down:
Here, ‘영어에 비해서’ means ‘compared to English’, which matches the part NOUN에 비해서 in the pattern.
‘한국어는’ is the subject.
Finally, ‘쉬워요’ means ‘easy’, which is the adjective describing the subject.
Here's another example
오늘은 어제에 비해서 더 더워요. (Oneureun eojee bihaeseo deo deowoyo.)
Today is hotter compared to yesterday.

Let's try one more,
다른 카페에 비해서 커피가 맛있어요. (Dareun kapee bihaeseo keopiga masisseoyo.)
The coffee tastes better compared to other cafés.
