You'll learn how in just a moment.
Hi, my name is Joyce, and this is Three Step Korean by KoreanClass101.com.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to make comparisons through a quick conversation.
Let's look at the dialogue.
As you listen, pay attention to how they compare things in the conversation.
엄마, 이 펜션은 어때요? 다른 펜션들에 비해서 가격이 저렴해요. (Eomma, i pensyeoneun eottaeyo? Dareun pensyeondeure bihaeseo gagyeogi jeoryeomhaeyo.)
그러네. 그런데 위치가 별로인 것 같아. (Geurone. Geureonde wichiga byeolroin geot gata.)
그러면 이 펜션은요? 바닷가 바로 옆에 있어요. (Geureomyeon i pensyeoneunyo? Badatga baro yeope isseoyo.)
주방도 있어? (Jubangdo isseo?)
네. 주방도 있고 방도 세 개예요. (Ne. Jubangdo itgo bangdo se gaeyeoyo.)
괜찮아 보이네. 여기로 예약할까? (Gwaenchana boine. Yeogiro yeyak halkka?)
Let's break it down.
엄마, 이 펜션은 어때요? 다른 펜션들에 비해서 가격이 저렴해요. (Eomma, i pensyeoneun eottaeyo? Dareun pensyeondeure bihaeseo gagyeogi jeoryeomhaeyo.)
"Mom, how about this pension? It's cheaper compared to others."
This second sentence is our focus for the lesson.
This starts with the phrase, 다른 펜션들 (dareun pensyeondeul), meaning "other pensions."
다른 (dareun) is an adjective meaning "other." 다른 (enunciated). 다른.
펜션들 (pensyeondeul) is the plural of 펜션 (pensyeon), meaning "pension," with -들 (deul), the plural-marking particle. 펜션들 (enunciated). 펜션들.
Next is the particle, 에 (e), the location or direction-marking particle. It marks the reference point in a comparison.
에 (enunciated). 에.
After this is the phrase, 비해서 (bihaeseo), meaning "compared to."
비해서 (enunciated). 비해서.
Next is the word, 가격 (gagyeok), meaning "price."
가격 (enunciated). 가격.
After this is the subject-marking particle, 이 (i), which marks 가격 (gagyeok) as the subject.
이 (enunciated). 이.
Next is the word, 저렴해요 (jeoryeomhaeyo), meaning "is cheap" or "is inexpensive."
저렴해요 (enunciated). 저렴해요.
The dictionary form of 저렴해요 is 저렴하다 (jeoryeomhada), meaning "to be inexpensive."
All together, it's 다른 펜션들에 비해서 가격이 저렴해요 (dareun pensyeondeure bihaeseo gagyeogi jeoryeomhaeyo).
This literally means "Compared to other pensions, [the] price is inexpensive," but in context it translates as "It's cheaper compared to others." 다른 펜션들에 비해서 가격이 저렴해요.
그러네. 그런데 위치가 별로인 것 같아. (Geurone. Geureonde wichiga byeolroin geot gata.)
"Yeah, but I think the location isn't great."
그러면 이 펜션은요? 바닷가 바로 옆에 있어요. (Geureomyeon i pensyeoneunyo? Badatga baro yeope isseoyo.)
"Then how about this pension? It's right next to the beach."
주방도 있어? (Jubangdo isseo?)
"Does it have a kitchen?"
네. 주방도 있고 방도 세 개예요. (Ne. Jubangdo itgo bangdo se gaeyeoyo.)
"Yes, it has a kitchen and three rooms."
괜찮아 보이네. 여기로 예약할까? (Gwaenchana boine. Yeogiro yeyak halkka?)
"It looks nice. Should we book this one?"
