INTRODUCTION

Seol: We have Jonas and Jenny, and Jonas is quite, like, unique. He loves Kimchi and that’s why he likes Korea and Jenny, I don’t know about her well. So let’s see.
Keith: In today’s lesson, I guess we will find out what Jenny feels.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: So let’s get some information on this conversation. So Jenny and Jonas, they are still talking about kimchi and they are using standard politeness level. All right so let’s get into it.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: All right. Seol, that was a very interesting conversation, wasn’t it?
Seol: It was.
Keith: Yeah Jenny and Jonas I don’t think they are going to be getting along after this conversation.
Seol: Because of kimchi?
Keith: Well Jonas is very unique so yeah I think kimchi takes precedence over people. Isn’t that strange?
Seol: Yeah he is strange.
Keith: But I still like the guy. I like him a lot. He has his priorities and his values and he sticks to them.
Seol: Which is kimchi?
Keith: Yeah. He is a passionate guy.
Seol: More strange.
Keith: All right. Let’s get into the vocab. All right, so we only have one vocabulary today.
VOCAB LIST
Seol: 싫어하다 (sireohada).
Keith: To dislike.
Seol: 싫어하다 (sireohada) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 싫어하다 (sireohada) [natural native speed]
Keith: Let’s take a look into the conversation and kind of get a review of our last lesson and use our new word 싫어하다(sireohada) . All right first we have
Seol: 요나스 씨 (yonaseu ssi).
Keith: Jonas followed by the honorific suffix. Here Jenny is getting his attention. All right next we have
Seol: 저는 김치를 진짜 싫어해요. ( jeoneun gimchireul jinjja sireohaeyo.)
Keith: All right. Let’s break this down a little bit. First is,
Seol: 저 (jeo)
Keith: I followed by
Seol: 는 (neun)
Keith: The topic marking particle.
Seol: 김치 (gimchi)
Keith: Kimchi followed by
Seol: 를 (reul)
Keith: The object marking particle.
Seol: 진짜 (jinjja)
Keith: Really
Seol: 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo).
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Dislike. So literally here it’s I kimchi really dislike. So basically I really dislike kimchi. In the vocab, we had 싫어하다 (sireohada) that’s the dictionary form of the verb. Here it’s conjugated into the standard politeness level. So Seol can you give that to us once more?
Seol: 싫어해요. 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo. sireohaeyo) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo) [natural native speed]
Keith: And this is used basically to describe what you don’t like. So here you can put anything in front and say 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo). Seol, do you have any examples?
Seol: 민트를 싫어해요 (minteureul sireohaeyo).
Keith: 진짜 (jinjja)?
Seol: 진짜 (jinjja).
Keith: What is that word one more time?
Seol: 민트 (minteu).
Keith: And this is the Koreanized word of the English word mint. And you really don’t like mint hah!
Seol: No.
Keith: They are so refreshing.
Seol: But it’s just strong.
Keith: Wait! So do you like mint chocolate?
Seol: Not really, no. I should be consistent, no. 민트 초콜릿을 싫어해요. (minteu chokolliseul sireohaeyo.)
Keith: All right. Great example. I don’t like cats.
Seol: Me neither.
Keith: 고양이를 싫어해요. (goyangireul sireohaeyo.)
Seol: 진짜 (jinjja)?
Keith: 진짜 싫어해요 (jinjja sireohaeyo). Well maybe some of our listeners will be cat lovers. So we shouldn’t be bashing on cats over here but yeah I really don’t like cats. All right so anything you don’t like, kimchi or 고양이 (goyangi) cats or mint, chocolate and then you can say 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo) I don’t like and if you want to put that emphasis, just put 진짜 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo) so kimchi 진짜 싫어해요 (jinjja sireohaeyo) just like Jenny is saying 김치를 진짜 싫어해요 (gimchireul jinjja sireohaeyo) she really doesn’t like kimchi. All right, let’s get to the next line.
Seol: 김치를 싫어해요 (gimchireul jinjja sireohaeyo)?
Keith: Now this is the same sentence as I dislike kimchi but here it has rising intonation. So let’s break it down really quickly and be sure to look out for that rising intonation. First is
Seol: 김치 (gimchi)
Keith: Kimchi followed by
Seol: 를 (reul)
Keith: The object marking particle. And next we have
Seol: 싫어해요(sireohaeyo)?
Keith: Dislike. So here it’s kimchi dislike, you don’t like kimchi. Once again, this – the rising intonation makes it into a question and the dropping intonation makes it into a statement. So 윤설 씨, 김치를 싫어해요 (yunseol ssi, gimchireul sireohaeyo)?
Seol: 아니요. 김치를 좋아해요. (aniyo. gimchireul joahaeyo.)
Keith: 저도요 (jeodoyo).
Seol: Yeah good expression. 저도요 (jeodoyo).
Keith: Yeah well we went over that one, right?
Seol: Right.
Keith: Yeah so it shouldn’t be too bad. So let’s move on to the next line. Next we have
Seol: 저는 제니를 싫어해요. (jeoneun jenireul sireohaeyo.)
Keith: That is a very interesting guy, Jonas. All right, let’s break this down really quick.
Seol: 저 (jeo)
Keith: I followed by
Seol: 는 (neun)
Keith: The topic marking particle. After that we have
Seol: 제니 (jeni)
Keith: Jenny followed by
Seol: 를 (reul)
Keith: The object marking particle and now we have
Seol: 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo).
Keith: Dislike. So literally it’s I Jenny dislike and here he says, basically I just don’t like you. I don’t like you Jenny.
Seol: Why?
Keith: Well I think Jenny wants to know too right? Like you don’t like Kimchi, I don’t like you. It’s like what! What happened? All right so let’s break this down. First is,
Seol: 저 (jeo)
Keith: Me followed by
Seol: 를 (reul)
Keith: The object marking particle and now we have
Seol: 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo)?
Keith: Dislike. So here it’s me dislike, you don’t like me. And Jonas replies
Seol: 제니는 김치를 싫어해요? (jenineun gimchireul sireohaeyo?)
Keith: Jenny, Kimchi dislike the question. So here it’s Jenny, you dislike kimchi? And his last sentence which is the clincher. He says
Seol: 저는 제니를 진짜 싫어해요. ( jeoneun jenireul jinjja sireohaeyo.)
Keith: You had fun reading that one, didn’t you? All right, let’s break it down real quick.
Seol: 저 (jeo)
Keith: I
Seol: 는 (neun)
Keith: Topic marking particle
Seol: 제니 (jeni)
Keith: Jenny followed by
Seol: 를 (reul)
Keith: Object marking particle
Seol: 진짜 (jinjja)
Keith: Really
Seol: 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo).
Keith: Dislike. So I Jenny really dislike, I really dislike Jenny. So here Jenny, you don’t like Kimchi, I really don’t like Jenny. All right, in today’s lesson, we only have one thing that we want you to get out of today’s lesson and that is
Seol: 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo).
Keith: Dislike. So you can say something kimchi, mints, chocolate and then
Seol: 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo).
Keith: Dislike or if you want to say the question,
Seol: 싫어해요 (sireohaeyo)?
Keith: All right. I think that’s going to do it for today.
Seol: Yeah this is the ending of today’s lesson but I hope Jenny really likes kimchi soon.
Keith: Wait! Who do you like better? Jonas or Jenny?
Seol: It used to be Jonas but he seems to be a little bit too strange, too unique, too passionate. So yeah now, Jenny is my favorite.
Keith: Jenny is your favorite? Oh I still like Jonas. I like a man with passion.
Seol: Oh like you?

Outro

Keith: Me, I – no I am not really passionate about much but yeah I wish I had that kind of fervor for something, even if it’s kimchi. All right, that’s going to do it.
Seol: 안녕 (annyeong).
Keith: See you.
