INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 45. Using Reported Speech.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for reporting something said by someone else.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "You said that you could not come."
Jaehwi: ๋ชป ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Jaehwi: [slow] ๋ชป ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Dana: The pattern for reporting something said by someone else has three elements. First, the adverb meaning "not be able to"...
Jaehwi: ๋ชป (mot).
Dana: Second, a verb stem, plus the phraseโ€ฆ
Jaehwi: ใ„ด๋‹ค๊ณ (ndago) or ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  (ondago).
Dana: Third, verb stem in past tense plus declarative sentence ending
Jaehwi: ์ž–์•„์š”(jannayo).
Jaehwi: In this case, ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š” (haetjannayo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "You said that you could not come."
Jaehwi: ๋ชป ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
[slow] ๋ชป ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
[normal] ๋ชป ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Dana: When you want to report something said by someone else, use the phrase, a verb, plus
Jaehwi:ใ„ด๋‹ค๊ณ (ndago) or ๋Š”๋‹ค๊ณ (neundago)
Dana: then, a verb plus
Jaehwi: ์ž–์•„์š”(jannayo).
Dana: In the sample sentence, the adverbโ€ฆ
Jaehwi: ๋ชป(mot), meaning โ€œnot,โ€
Dana: ...is followed by the phrase
Jaehwi: ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  (ondago.) This has a verb stem ์˜ค(o) plus ๋Š”๋‹ค๊ณ (neundago)
Dana: Finish the sentence with a verb plus
Jaehwi: ์ž–์•„์š”(jannayo).
Dana: Note if you use the past tense for the verbโ€ฆ
Jaehwi: ํ•˜๋‹ค(hada)
Dana:... you need to sayโ€ฆ
Jaehwi: ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”(haetjannayo).
Dana: Once more, "You said that you could not come."
Jaehwi: ๋ชป ์˜จ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Dana: So remember, use the pattern...
Jaehwi: Verb plus ใ„ด๋‹ค๊ณ (ndago) or ๋Š”๋‹ค๊ณ (neundago) Verb, plus ์ž–์•„์š”(jannayo).
Dana: ...when you want to report something that has been said by someone else.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "You said that you were busy."
Jaehwi: First, the adjective stem plus ๋‹ค๊ณ (dago), which forms ๋ฐ”์˜๋‹ค๊ณ  (bappeudago).
Dana: Followed by verb stem in past tense plus the declarative sentence ending...
Jaehwi: ์ž–์•„์š”(jannayo).
Dana: Which is...
Jaehwi: ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š” (haetjannayo).
Dana: Altogether we have...
Jaehwi: ๋ฐ”์˜๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
[slow] ๋ฐ”์˜๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
[normal] ๋ฐ”์˜๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
Dana: "You said that you were busy."
[pause]
Jaehwi: ๋ฐ”์˜๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
Dana: How do you say, "You said that you loved me."? To give you a hint, "to love" is...
Jaehwi: ์‚ฌ๋ž‘ํ•˜๋‹ค (saranghada). [slow] ์‚ฌ๋ž‘ํ•˜๋‹ค (saranghada). [normal] ์‚ฌ๋ž‘ํ•˜๋‹ค (saranghada).
Dana: "You said that you loved me."
[pause]
Jaehwi: ์‚ฌ๋ž‘ํ•œ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
[slow] ์‚ฌ๋ž‘ํ•œ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
[normal] ์‚ฌ๋ž‘ํ•œ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
[pause]
Jaehwi: ์‚ฌ๋ž‘ํ•œ๋‹ค๊ณ  ํ–ˆ์ž–์•„์š”. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
