INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 45. Using Reported Speech.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for reporting something said by someone else.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "You said that you could not come."
Jaehwi: 못 온다고 했잖아요. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Jaehwi: [slow] 못 온다고 했잖아요. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Dana: The pattern for reporting something said by someone else has three elements. First, the adverb meaning "not be able to"...
Jaehwi: 못 (mot).
Dana: Second, a verb stem, plus the phrase…
Jaehwi: ㄴ다고(ndago) or 온다고 (ondago).
Dana: Third, verb stem in past tense plus declarative sentence ending
Jaehwi: 잖아요(jannayo).
Jaehwi: In this case, 했잖아요 (haetjannayo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "You said that you could not come."
Jaehwi: 못 온다고 했잖아요. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
[slow] 못 온다고 했잖아요. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
[normal] 못 온다고 했잖아요. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Dana: When you want to report something said by someone else, use the phrase, a verb, plus
Jaehwi:ㄴ다고(ndago) or 는다고(neundago)
Dana: then, a verb plus
Jaehwi: 잖아요(jannayo).
Dana: In the sample sentence, the adverb…
Jaehwi: 못(mot), meaning “not,”
Dana: ...is followed by the phrase
Jaehwi: 온다고 (ondago.) This has a verb stem 오(o) plus 는다고(neundago)
Dana: Finish the sentence with a verb plus
Jaehwi: 잖아요(jannayo).
Dana: Note if you use the past tense for the verb…
Jaehwi: 하다(hada)
Dana:... you need to say…
Jaehwi: 했잖아요(haetjannayo).
Dana: Once more, "You said that you could not come."
Jaehwi: 못 온다고 했잖아요. (mot ondago haetjannayo.)
Dana: So remember, use the pattern...
Jaehwi: Verb plus ㄴ다고(ndago) or 는다고(neundago) Verb, plus 잖아요(jannayo).
Dana: ...when you want to report something that has been said by someone else.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "You said that you were busy."
Jaehwi: First, the adjective stem plus 다고(dago), which forms 바쁘다고 (bappeudago).
Dana: Followed by verb stem in past tense plus the declarative sentence ending...
Jaehwi: 잖아요(jannayo).
Dana: Which is...
Jaehwi: 했잖아요 (haetjannayo).
Dana: Altogether we have...
Jaehwi: 바쁘다고 했잖아요. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
[slow] 바쁘다고 했잖아요. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
[normal] 바쁘다고 했잖아요. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
Dana: "You said that you were busy."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 바쁘다고 했잖아요. (bappeudago haetjannayo.)
Dana: How do you say, "You said that you loved me."? To give you a hint, "to love" is...
Jaehwi: 사랑하다 (saranghada). [slow] 사랑하다 (saranghada). [normal] 사랑하다 (saranghada).
Dana: "You said that you loved me."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 사랑한다고 했잖아요. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
[slow] 사랑한다고 했잖아요. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
[normal] 사랑한다고 했잖아요. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 사랑한다고 했잖아요. (saranghandago haetjannayo)
