INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 42. Making Polite Commands.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something that needs to be done.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "You have to clean your room right now."
Jaehwi: 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
Jaehwi: [slow] 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
Dana: The pattern for describing something that needs to be done has three elements. First, the noun meaning "right now".
Jaehwi: 당장 (dangjang).
Dana: Second, the noun "room", plus topic marking particle
Jaehwi: 을(eul).
Dana: Which together, form the word
Jaehwi: 방을 (bangeul).
Dana: Third, the verb infinitive meaning "clean room", plus sentence ending
Jaehwi: 야해요(yahaeyo).
Dana: Which together, form the word
Jaehwi: 청소해야해요 (cheonksohaeyahaeyo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "You have to clean your room right now."
Jaehwi: 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
[slow] 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
[normal] 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
Dana: This sentence has the noun
Jaehwi: 당장 (dangjang)
Dana: plus a verb infinitive. Then we have...
Jaehwi: 아하다(a hada) or 어하다 (eo hada) or 여야하다(yeoya hada)
Dana: You can use this sentence to describe something that has to be done, usually right away.
Jaehwi: 당장 (dangjang) means "right away,"
Dana: Once again, the sentence "You have to clean your room right now" is...
Jaehwi: 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
Dana: So remember to use the phrase
Jaehwi: 당장 (dangjang) plus verb infinitive plus 아하다(a hada) or 어하다 (eo hada) or 여야하다(yeoya hada)
Dana: ...when you want to describe something that needs to be done right away.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "Do your homework right now." First, noun, "right now".
Jaehwi: 당장 (dangjang).
Dana: Second, verb infinitive, "do homework" plus sentence ending
Jaehwi: 야해요(yahaeyo).
Jaehwi: In this case, we have 숙제해야해요 (sukjehaeyo).
Dana: Altogether we have...
Jaehwi: 당장 숙제해야해요. (dangjang sukjehaeyahaeyo.)
[slow] 당장 숙제해야해요. (dangjang sukjehaeyahaeyo.)
[normal] 당장 숙제해야해요. (dangjang sukjehaeyahaeyo.)
Dana: "Do your homework right now."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 숙제해야해요. (dangjang sukjehaeyahaeyo.)
Dana: How do you say, "Study right now."? To give you a hint, "study" is...
Jaehwi: 공부 (gongbu). [slow] 공부 (gongbu). [normal] 공부 (gongbu).
Dana: "Study right now."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 공부해야해. (dangjang gongbuhaeyahae.)
[slow] 당장 공부해야해. (dangjang gongbuhaeyahae.)
[normal] 당장 공부해야해. (dangjang gongbuhaeyahae.)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 공부해야해. (dangjang gongbuhaeyahae.)
REVIEW
Dana: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will tell you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Korean. Here we go.
Dana: "You have to clean your room right now."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
Dana: "Do your homework right now."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 숙제해야해요. (dangjang sukjehaeyahaeyo.)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 숙제해야해요. (dangjang sukjehaeyahaeyo.)

Jaehwi: 당장 공부해야해. (dangjang gongbuhaeyahae.)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 당장 공부해야해. (dangjang gongbuhaeyahae.)

Outro

Dana: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for describing something that needs to be done, as in...
Jaehwi: 당장 방을 청소해야해. (dangjang bangeul cheongsohaeyahae.)
Dana: meaning "You have to clean your room right now."
Dana: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out at KoreanClass101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!
Jaehwi: 그럼 다음 시간에 만나요! (Geureom daeum sigane mannayo!).
