INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 36 - Explaining a Result or Response.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for explaining the reason for doing actions one after another.
PATTERN
Dana: For example...
Dana: "I'm tired so I'm going to sleep."
Jaehwi: 피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.)
Jaehwi: [slow] 피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.)
Dana: The pattern for explaining the reason for doing actions one after another has 3 elements. First, there’s the adjective plus the conjunction particle,
Jaehwi: 아/어/여서 (a/eo/yeo seo).
Jaehwi: 피곤해서 (pigonhaeseo).
Dana: Second, there’s the intention, to sleep in the near future.
Jaehwi: 자려고요 (jaryeogoyo).
Dana: All together, we have "I'm tired so I'm going to sleep."
Jaehwi: 피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.) [slow]
피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.) [normal]
피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.)
Dana: The conjunction particle,
Jaehwi: 아/어/여 서 (a/eo/yeo seo),
Dana: is a conjunction that connects two actions that take place one after the other. It is used after verb stems. After using this phrase, you connect another action that took place, by adding the verb stem and suffix. In this case, it’s the verb stem plus suffix…
Jaehwi: 려고요 (ryeogoyo)
Dana: “intention to do something”. You will use…
Jaehwi: 아서 (aseo)
Dana: after verb stems that have…
Jaehwi: ㅗ or ㅓ
Dana: as the final syllable, and…
Jaehwi: 어서 (eo seo)
Dana: for all other verb stems that do not end with the vowels…
Jaehwi: ㅗ and ㅓ.
Jaehwi: 여서 (yeo seo)
Dana: is used with
Jaehwi: 하다 (hada) verbs.
Dana: You can use this phrase for the past, present, and future tense by changing the ending of the sentence to the past, present, or future tense.
Jaehwi: 피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.)
Dana: So remember 아/어/여 서 (a/eo/yeo seo) is a conjunction used to explain the reason for the following action or condition.
Dana: Here is another example, meaning "I was hungry so I ate." First, you have the adjective plus the conjunction,
Jaehwi: 아/어/여서 (a/eo/yeo seo).
Jaehwi: 배고파서 (baegopaseo).
Dana: Second, there’s the noun.
Jaehwi: 밥 (bap).
Dana: Third, the verb “ate,” past tense.
Jaehwi: 먹었어요 (meogeosseo).
Dana: All together, we have...
Jaehwi: 배고파서 밥 먹었어요. (baegopaseo bap meogeosseoyo) [slow]
배고파서 밥 먹었어요. (baegopaseo bap meogeosseoyo) [normal]
배고파서 밥 먹었어요. (baegopaseo bap meogeosseoyo)
Dana: "I was hungry so I ate."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 배고파서 밥 먹었어요. (baegopaseo bap meogeosseoyo)
Dana: How do you say "I'm bored so I'm going to play"? To give you a hint, "going to play" is...
Jaehwi: 놀려고요. [slow] 놀려고요. [normal] 놀려고요.
Dana: "I'm bored so I'm going to play."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 심심해서 놀려고요. [slow] 심심해서 놀려고요. [normal] 심심해서 놀려고요.
[pause]
Jaehwi: 심심해서 놀려고요.
REVIEW
Dana: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I'll tell you the English equivalent of the phrase and you say it in Korean. Here we go.
Dana: "I'm tired so I'm going to sleep."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.)

Outro

Dana: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for explaining the reason for doing actions one after another, as in...
Jaehwi: 피곤해서 자려고요. (pigonhaeseo jareo garyeogoyo.)
Dana: ...meaning "I'm tired so I'm going to sleep."
Dana: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out at KoreanClass101.com. Thanks, everyone, and see you next time!
