Tim: It's already that late! I don't know whether or not we should drive back home right now or spend the night here and go back home tomorrow. What should we do?
고은: 너무 늦었으니까 묵고 가자. 물론 부모님께서 무슨 말을 하실지 모르겠지만.
Goeun: Let's spend the night here since it's so late. Of course, I don't know what my parents would say to that.
수진: 응, 나도, 아버지가 허락할지 모르겠네.
Sujin: Yes, me too. I don't know whether or not my dad will let me.

Goeun: It's my turn. I don’t know if this will work, but… Dad, I'm at Chuncheon right now. Our car broke down, so we might have to spend the night here. Okay. Okay. He said I can spend the night here!

팀: 자. 그럼 나가자!
Tim: Well then, let's go!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Debbie: In today’s conversation, 팀, 수진, 철수 and 고은 all seek permission from their parents before spending the night in 춘천. Tim, is this a common occurrence amongst Korean teenagers or young adults?
Tim: 예. 저도 어렸을 때 그랬어요. 그래서 부모님과 다툼도 많이 했어요.
Debbie: What really! So you also had to get permission from your parents and because of that, you often argued with them.
Tim: 예. 그건 저뿐만이 아니고요 다 그래요. I wasn’t the only one. Everyone did that.
Debbie: I see. Speaking of family, why don’t we learn vocabulary words associated with family members?
Tim: 좋아요. Let’s start with 부모님 or 부모, parents.
Debbie: And next is 아버지 or 아빠, father.
Tim: Next 어머니 or 엄마, mother.
Debbie: 형 older brother used by males.
Tim: Next 오빠 older brother used by females.
Debbie: Next is 언니 older sister used by females.
Tim: Next 누나 older sister used by males.
Debbie: Next 남동생 younger brother.
Tim: And next 여동생 younger sister.
Debbie: And last we have 막내 or 막둥이, youngest in the family. By the way, Tim, how about your family, how many members are in your family?
Tim: 아, 우리 가족은요 아버지, 어머니, 누나, 그리고 저 이렇게 네 명으로 구성되어 있습니다. My family has four members: my father, my mother, older sister and me.
Debbie: I see. Did you get along with your older sister?
Tim: 아니요. 누나랑 맨날 다투고 싸워요. No, we often argue and fight.
Debbie: Really? So it’s like you and me. Okay well, now let’s move on to today’s key vocabulary. Let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

Debbie: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Debbie: The first word is
Tim: 묵다. To stay the night.
Debbie: 묵다 is often said when somebody stays at a place for a number of nights.
Tim: 예, 맞아요. Its formation is name of a place plus number of nights plus 묵다.
Debbie: Yeah. So for example, 한국에서 3박 4일을 묵다 to stay for 4 days and 3 nights in Korea.
Tim: Yes. Here is another example. 저는 호텔에서 2박 3일을 묵을 것입니다. I am going to stay for 3 days and 2 nights at a hotel.
Debbie: Tim, if I visit Korea, can I stay the night at your house?
Tim: 뭐라고요? 저의 집에서 묵어도 되냐고요? I don’t know if my parents would ever allow that. I have to ask them first. Wait a minute! 어머니, 저요. 예, 알겠습니다. 안 된다고 하는데요? My mom says, no you cannot.
Debbie: What! You didn’t even ask her. So how could she say no?
Tim: Ah my mom and I can read each other’s mind.
Debbie: Like mother like son. Ah okay, well let’s take a look at the next word.
Tim: 허락 is a noun meaning permission or approval.
Debbie: Tim, can we make it a verb to mean to give permission?
Tim: Yes, you can. 허락 permission plus 하다 to do. So it becomes 허락하다 meaning to give permission. Here is an example sentence. 어머니는 내가 한국에 가는 것을 허락하셨어요.
Debbie: My mother allowed me to go on a trip to South Korea. Then what about to receive permission?
Tim: 아, 그건요 허락 permission plus 받다 to receive. So it becomes 허락받다 meaning to receive permission from someone. Can you make an example sentence for us, Debbie?
Debbie: 알겠습니다. Here it is. 여기서 우리가 묵기 위해서는 먼저 부모님께 허락받아야 해. First we have to ask for permission from our parents in order to stay the night here.
Tim: Wow, that’s a good example, Debbie.
Debbie: 앗싸! Thank you. Okay now let’s move on to the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Debbie: The focus of today’s lesson is the expression not know, whether or not to verb.
Tim: 예. 한국어로 ‘뭐뭐해야 할지 모르다’입니다.
Debbie: Yeah this expression 뭐뭐해야 할지 모르다 is often used in order to indicate doubt about a future prediction.
Tim: 예, 맞습니다. So 뭐뭐해야 할지 모르다 shows some degree of worry, doubt, fear, and hesitation.
Debbie: In today’s dialogue, we can see that there are two usages of 뭐뭐할지 모르다. They are
Tim: First noun plus 할지 모르다.
Debbie: Not know whether or not the subject, would do, noun.
Tim: Second, verb stem plus 어야 or 아야 or 여야 할지 모르다.
Debbie: Not know whether or not the subject should verb. Unfortunately we don’t have much time today. So we will only cover the second usage verb stem plus 어야 or 아야 or 여야 할지 모르다. Please refer to the lesson notes for more details. Okay Tim, can you tell us about the conjugation rule?
Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. The rule is verb stem plus 어야 or 아야 or 여야 할지 모르다 meaning not know whether or not to verb.
Debbie: Yes. This expression shows doubt about the action the speaker will or would do in the near future.
Tim: 예, 맞아요. Let’s take a look at some example sentence. 가다 means to go. 가 is the verb stem and you add 야 할지 모르다. So it becomes 가야 할지 모르다 meaning not know whether or not I should go.
Debbie: With the verb 돌아가다 to return 돌아가 is the verb stem and we add 야 할지 모르다. So it becomes 돌아가야 할지 모르다 meaning do not know whether or not I should return home.
Tim: 예, 맞아요. Here is an example sentence. 차가 막혀서 다시 돌아가야 할지 모르겠네.
Debbie: Which means because of heavy traffic, I do not know whether or not we should go back. That’s a good example. So what’s the next verb, Tim?
Tim: 보다 means to see or to watch. 보 is the verb stem and we add 아야 할지 모르다. So it becomes 봐야 할지 모르다 meaning not sure whether or not I should watch it. Here is yan example sentence. 이 드라마를 봐야 할지 모르겠어.
Debbie: Which means I am not sure whether or not I should watch this TV show. Okay this time, let me make one. Tim, give me any Korean verb.
Tim: Okay 하다 which means to do.
Debbie: Okay 하다 means to do. 하 is the verb stem. Then we add 어야 할지 모르다 so it becomes 해야 할지 모르다 meaning not know whether or not I should do it.
Tim: Wow! Excellent. Here is another example sentence. 이 일을 해야 할지 모르겠네.
Debbie: Which means I do not know whether or not I should do this. That’s a good example.
Tim: Umm here is the last example with the verb 계속하다 which means to continue 계속하 verb stem plus 어야 할지 모르다 so it becomes 계속해야 할지 모르다 meaning not sure whether or not I should continue. Here is an example sentence. 청취자 여러분, 녹음을 계속해야 할지 말아야 할지 모르겠어요. 전화 주세요.
Debbie: Which means listeners, I am not sure whether or not I should continue recording. Please give me a call. No way, Tim, you won’t get any phone calls from anyone.
Tim: 왔어요, 왔어.
Debbie: Unbelievable.
Tim: 여보세요. 여보세요. 네.
Debbie: What did he say?
Tim: He said, stop recording.
Debbie: 뭐라고요? I don’t believe you. It’s probably your mom.

Outro

Debbie: Okay well, that’s all for today’s lesson.
Tim: 그리고 코멘트 남겨 주세요. 여러분, 들어 주셔서 감사하고요.
Debbie: 저도 감사해요. See you next time.
Tim: See you next time. Bye.
Debbie: Bye. 근데 정말 그만 하래요?
Tim: 어...네.
