VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Debbie: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Debbie: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...?
Tim: 인분 "portions or servings of food"
Debbie: 인분 is often used when trying to order (강조)"portions or servings of food" for (강조)"a number of people" at any Korean restaurant.
Tim: 예, 맞습니다. The formation is [name of food] + "Sino-Korean number" + 인분, meaning "a number of servings". For example, 막국수 "삼"인분!
Debbie: "Three servings of Korean buckwheat noodles!" Tim, what can listeners do if they want to brush up on 'Sino-Korean Numbers' and their 'Counting Units'?
Tim: They can listen to "Absolute Beginner Season 2 Lesson 10" to learn more about those!
Debbie: That's right. It's that simple!
Tim: So Debbie, how can you order "five servings of 비빔밥"?
Debbie: 비빔밥 "name of food" + 오 "five" + 인분 "servings"; therefore, all together (강조)"비.빔.밥. 오. 인.분" 주세요 "Please bring us five servings of 비빔밥".
Tim: Great!
Debbie: 자~~ 그럼 다음 단어는 뭐죠?
Tim: 깜빡, which is usually used when you forget to do something.
Debbie: Yes, that's right! 깜빡 is often placed right before a verb, in order to emphasize the verb. For example, 내가 (강조)"깜.빡" 했어! It "just" slipped my mind!
Tim: I also have another example - 데비 미안해, 어젯밤에 전화하는 걸 "깜.빡"했어! "Sorry Debbie, I forgot to give you a call last night!"
Debbie: "How dare you (강조)"simply" forget that!?"
Tim: 미안해요 데비씨~~ 용서해 주세요~~ "forgive me please~~"
Debbie: 하하하~~ 여러분 오늘 배운 단어들 "깜빡"하지 마시고요! "Listeners, try not to let the words you learned today slip your mind!"
Tim: 예 맞아요~~ Well, now let's move on to the lesson focus!

Lesson focus

Debbie: In this lesson, we will learn how to express "unintended actions".
Tim: 예, 한국말로, "--고 말다" 입니다.
Debbie: This expression, 고 말다, is used by the speaker to indicate "something has just been done" or "an action that is done or happened unintentionally", and sometimes with unsatisfactory results. In many cases, this expression, 고 말다, emphasizes "the main verb". Tim, can you tell us about the formation first?
Tim: 예 알겠습니다. Its formation is "verb stem" + 고 말다, meaning "something has (강조)"finally" to VERB".
Debbie: Verb stem + 고 말다? Is that all?
Tim: Yes, that's all!
Debbie: 팀, 그럼 예문 부탁해요.
Tim: 알겠습니다. Let's try one with the verb, 오다 which means "to come". 오 is the 'verb stem', then you add 고 말다; so it becomes (강조)"오.고." 말다 "has ended up coming". Here is an example sentence, 우리 결국 여기까지 (강조)"오.고. 말았구나"!
Debbie: Which means, "We eventually (강조)"ended up coming" here!". What about this example sentence - 팀한테 전화해야 하는 것을 깜빡 (강조)"잊.고. 말았어요!" "I unintentionally forgot to give Tim a call".
Tim: 아~~ Debbie used the verb, 잊다 which means "to forget". 잊 is the 'verb stem', then you add 고 말다; so it becomes (강조)"잊.고." 말다 "unintentionally forgot".
Debbie: Okay, this time, let's try it with 시키다 which means "to order".
Tim: 알겠습니다. 시키 is the 'verb stem', then you add 고 말다; so it becomes (강조)"시.키.고." 말다 "has finally ended up ordering something". For example, 저는 결국 비빔밥, 자장면, 짬뽕, 그리고 불고기, 모두를 다 (강조)"시.키.고. 말았습니다".
Debbie: Which means, "I've eventually ended up ordering everything - bibimbab, black bean noodles, spicy seafood noodles, and bulgogi". Here's another one - 전 결국 한국어 선생님이 (강조)"되.고. 말았어요"! "I ended up becoming a Korean language teacher!"
Tim: 아~~ Debbie used the verb, 되다 which means "to become". 되 is the 'verb stem', then you add 고 말다; so it becomes (강조)"되.고." 말다 "ended up becoming someone". Therefore, 선생님이 (강조)"되.고. 말다" means "ended up becoming a teacher". What a great sentence! By the way, Debbie?
Debbie: 뭐죠, 팀?
Tim: 데비씨 한국어 선생님되면...무서워요~~ "If Debbie ever became a Korean teacher in a classroom, she would be scary."
Debbie: (성질을 내며) 뭐요!?
Tim: See~~ 데비씨 무서워요~~
Debbie: (아주 부드러운 목소리로) 아니에요 여러분~~ 전 아주 "부드러운" 선생님이 (강조)"되.고. 말거"에요~~ "No, I'm not scary, I will eventually become a very nice teacher.
Tim: Lies! It's all lies!
Debbie: 흠흠!!! 팀 학생은, 나중에 "교.무.실"로 오세요~~ "Tim, come to the teachers' office later~~"
Tim: Oh no! Am I in trouble?
Debbie: Ahem. You'll see!

Outro

Debbie: Okay, well that's a wrap for today's lesson.
Tim: 여러분 들어주셔서 감사드리고요,
Debbie: 저도 감사드려요...
Tim and Debbie: 그럼 여러분 안녕~~ Bye~~
Tim: 데비씨는 정말 좋은 선생님이 될거에요
Debbie: 알아요~~ 근데 팀은 '체육 선생님'이 잘 어울려요...
Tim &Debbie: 하하하~~~
