INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요, 미현입니다.
Junsoo: Hi, I’m Junsoo.
Hyunwoo: Do some work while you’re here! 준수, do you think you’re good at managing time and organize your schedule efficiently? 시간관리를 효과적으로 잘하세요?
Junsoo: Well, I want to be better at it, but it’s too difficult.
Mihyeon: 진짜 좀 어려운 것 같아요. How about you?
Hyunwoo: I think it’s difficult, too. Everybody has only 스물네시간 24 hours a day and sometimes, a day is too short.
Mihyeon: 맞아요. 요즘 왜이렇게 시간이 빨리 가는지 모르겠어요.
Hyunwoo: 네 미현씨. Do you have any special way to use your time more wisely? 시간을 더 현명하게 쓸수있는 방법이 있어요?
Mihyeon: 음, 특별한 방법은 없는데. 텔레비전을 보면서 설겆이하고, 또 지하철 타면서 책을 보고, 친구랑 전화하면서 과자도 먹고.
Junsoo: So, when you’re on your phone with your friends, while you’re at it, you eat something, right?
Mihyeon: 네, 맞아요. 전화하는 김에 과자도 먹고 그래요.
Hyunwoo: I think that’s a very good idea. Okay. So, in this lesson, let’s find out how to say that in Korean. How to say “While you’re at it”, “While I’m at it” or “Since I’m going to be doing it anyway.”
Junsoo: Sounds good. So, what kind of dialogue do we have today?
Mihyeon: 네, 오늘 대화도 지난 레슨에서 이어지는 대화죠?
Junsoo: 네, that’s right. It’s a continued dialogue from the last lesson. And who’s the dialogue between, again? And what kind of politeness level is being used?
Mihyeon: 네, 지윤과 석민의 대화에요. 두사람은 친구이니까 반말을 쓰고 있구요.
Hyunwoo: 좋습니다. 대화를 잘 들어보세요.
DIALOGUE
(1)지윤: 책을 사고 싶어서 서점에 가는 길이야.
(2)석민: 아, 정말? 그럼 서점에 가는 김에 나 만화책 사 줘!!
(3)지윤: 만화책? 나중에 돈 줄 거야?
(4)석민: 어디 서점으로 가?
(5)지윤: 용산으로.
(6)석민: 왜 그렇게 멀리 가?
(7)지윤: 가는 김에 컴퓨터도 좀 보려고.
(8)석민: 아, 정말? 그럼 가는 김에 내 생일 선물도!
(9)지윤: ... (전화끊김)
(10)석민: 야. 야. 여보세요?
(1)Jiyun: I'm on my way to the bookstore because I want to buy a book.
(2)Seokmin: Oh, really? Then, while you're at it, get me a comic book!
(3)Jiyun: A comic book? Are you going to pay me later?
(4)Seokmin: Which store are you going to?
(5)Jiyun: One in Yongsan.
(6)Seokmin: Why are you going so far?
(7)Jiyun: I'm going to look at some computers while I'm there.
(8)Seokmin: Oh really? Then while you're at it get me a birthday present!

(10)Seokmin: Hey, hey. hello?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: 네, 잘 들어보셨나요?
Mihyeon: 네, 근데 지윤이가 불쌍해요.
Hyunwoo: 진짜요? Why do you feel sorry for her?
Junsoo: Well, I was feeling sorry for 지윤 because 석민 was asking her all these favors, but in the end she just hung up the phone.
Hyunwoo: 그래요 But I think 석민 is very good at managing time.
Mihyeon: 석민이가 시간관리를 잘한다구요??
Hyunwoo: 네, for your information, 시간관리 means -
Junsoo: Time management.
Hyunwoo: 시간 means “time” and 관리 means “management”. And, naturally, 관리하다 means “to manage”. And I think 석민 is very good at 시간관리 because he’s trying to get comic books and his birthday present bought for him at the same time, and he’s still at his part time job. I would say that’s very efficient.
Junsoo: Well, yeah, if you want to lose all your friends.
Mihyeon: 그래도 지윤이가 더 대단하네요. 딱하고 전화를 끊어 버렸잖아요.
Junsoo: Because she refused to do anything for him?
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: 미현씨, So ,I can’t ask you these kind of favors?
Mihyeon: 뭐, 현우씨 생일이라면 몰라도...평소에는 그런 부탁 안 들어줄거에요.
Hyunwoo: 아, 그렇군요. 제 생일이 되려면 아직 멀었는데...한참 기다려야 되겠군요. By the way, the word 생일 is in today’s vocabulary list, so let’s have a look together.

Hyunwoo: What’s today’s first word?
Mihyeon: 오늘의 첫번째 단어는 만화책이에요. 만화책. 만화책.
Junsoo: This word means a “comic book”. 만화 means “cartoon” or “comic” and 책 means “book”.
Hyunwoo: That’s right. 준수, do you like comic books? 만화책 좋아하세요?
Junsoo: Well, I used to like them a lot when I was younger, when I was in middle school, actually, but not anymore. I’m grown up now.
Hyunwoo: Grow up한 다음에 만화책 읽으면 안되요?
Junsoo: Well, actually I read some sometimes.
Hyunwoo: 네, 저도 가끔 읽는데. Do you buy them or borrow them at a 책 대여점, “book rental shop”?
Junsoo: Well, I only borrow them. I never buy them. I think, it’s kind of a waste of money when there are so many rental shops around.
Hyunwoo: 응, 저도 그렇게 생각해요. 비싸고, 한번 읽는데 시간이 얼마 안걸리잖아요. So, I usually borrow them, too. 미현, how do you say “to borrow a comic book”?
Mihyeon: 만화책을 빌리다.
Hyunwoo: How about “I borrowed a comic book”?
Mihyeon: 만화책을 빌렸어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay. And how do you say “to read a comic book”?
Mihyeon: 만화책을 읽다.
Hyunwoo: And how about “I read a comic book”?
Mihyeon: 만화책을 읽었어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay, thank you. What’s the next word?
Mihyeon: 오늘의 두번째 단어는 '멀리'에요. 멀리. 멀리
Junsoo: And, what does this mean?
Mihyeon: 먼곳으로, 먼곳에, 먼곳까지.
Junsoo: Yeah, this is an adverb form of the verb 멀다, which means “to be far away”. And what’s the opposite of 멀다?
Mihyeon: 가깝다. 그리고 멀리의 반대말은 '가까이'에요.
Hyunwoo: 아, 그렇죠.그러면 미현씨, '멀리'와 '가까이'의 예를 들어주세요.
Mihyeon: 현우씨, 가까이 오지 마세요.
Junsoo: 현우, don’t come any closer!
Mihyeon: 음, 저 두사람 너무 가까이 있는거 아니에요?
Junsoo: Hmm, don’t you think those two people are too close together?
Mihyeon: 이번에는 '멀리' 예문을 하나 드릴께요.아, 멀리 떠나고 싶어요.
Junsoo: Ah, I want to go someplace far away.
Mihyeon: 아, 준수씨, 멀리까지 여행갔다 온거 너무 부러워요.
Junsoo: 준수, I envy you for having traveled so far away.
Hyunwoo: I envy you, too. 준수, 어디갔다 왔어요?
Junsoo: Actually, it’s not that far, but I traveled Korea on my bike. Until the southernmost part of the peninsula.
Hyunwoo: Please tell us more stories about your travel in the future. And, for now, let’s go onto the next word.
Mihyeon: 네 현우씨. 빨리 다음 단어 소개해 주세요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 다음 단어는 '그렇게' 입니다.
Mihyeon: 그렇게. 그렇게. 그렇게. 그렇게.
Junsoo: This is the adjective form of the verb 그렇다 which means “to be so”. It can mean like that or that as in “that much”.
Mihyeon: 현우씨. 왜 그렇게 기분이 다운되어 있어요?
Junsoo: 현우, why do you look so depressed?
Hyunwoo: 아까 미현씨가 가까이 오지 말라고 했잖아요.
Mihyeon: 아, 저 그렇게 말 안했어요. 그거 그냥 예문이었잖아요.
Junsoo: Well, I heard 미현 say something like that earlier. And, by the way, 그렇게 말하다 means “talk to somebody in such a manner” or “say such a thing in such a way”.
Hyunwoo: 아, 미현씨는 제가 그렇게 싫어요? Do you hate me that much?
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: 네?
Mihyeon: 네..아니에요. 뭐 그렇게 싫지는 않아요.
Junsoo: You don’t hate him that much – that doesn’t sound very good either.
Hyunwoo: 미현씨 if you, 그렇게 keep teasing me, 미현씨 생일때 생일선물 안 사줄거에요. .
Mihyeon: 음, 괜찮아요. 저 친구 많아서 현우씨가 생일선물 안 사줘도 괜찮아요.
Junsoo: 미현, I’ll give you a birthday present so don’t worry. But, what’s the word again?
Mihyeon: 네, 생일선물이요. 생일선물. 생일선물. 생일선물.
Junsoo: Yeah. And as you know 생일 mean “birthday” and 선물 means “present” or “gift”. But, we’d like to take a deeper look at these words. 생일 is a general word for “birthday”, but if you’re referring to the birthday of someone who’s much older than you and you want to express your upmost politeness, you use the word 생신, it’s usually your school teacher, parents or grandparents.
Hyunwoo: So that means, no matter how upset I would be by 미현's all that teasing, I can’t really say 생신 to 미현, right?
Mihyeon: 생신이라고 부를거면 '누님', 이렇게 해보세요.
Hyunwoo: I don’t want to. Yeah, just like that. If I said 생신 to 미현씨 like 미현씨, 생신이 언제세요?, that’s really weird. So, make sure you only use to or about someone in your parent’s age or someone you have to be extremely polite with.
Junsoo: Yeah, in Korean, I would ask 현우 something like 현우오빠, 생일이 언제세요? but not 현우오빠, 생신이 언제세요?? Because that’s way too much. But saying 생신 to or about your parents, relatives in your parent’s age, your teachers who are in your parent’s age is actually very good.
Hyunwoo: Okay. 설명 감사합니다, 준수씨. Now, let’s get into today’s grammar point. What’s today’s grammar point, 준수 ?
Junsoo: Today’s grammar point is ~김에.. The word 김 has a lot of meanings, but in this grammatical structure, the meaning of occasion it’s the one that’s used. ~는 김에 expressed doing one or more things based on the fact the other action is happening. So, it can be translated as “while you’re at it” while it happens to be in that state or “since it’s been done already”.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 그래서 어떻게 활용할 수 있죠? How do you conjugate it and contract it into a sentence?
Junsoo: Well, in the present tense, you put the verb stamp and then add ~는 김에.
Mihyeon: 예를 들어 '가다 plus ~는김에=가는 김에'..
Hyunwoo: Yeah, that means “since you are going there”.
Mihyeon: 먹다 plus ~는 김에=먹는 김에
Hyunwoo: That means “while you eat” or “since you’re eating anyway”. And there are some exceptions to this rule, so if you want to know more about the exceptions, please look at the PDF, we have a detailed information about the exception and there are some exceptions to this rule. Junsoo: For the past tense, you put the verb stamp plus ~은 김에.
Mihyeon: 가다+은 김에 =간 김에
Hyunwoo: So that means “you went there” so while you’re there.
Mihyeon: 먹다+은 김에=먹은 김에
Hyunwoo: And that means “since you’ve already eaten it”. Okay, so how was this grammar pattern used in today’s dialogue?
Mihyeon: 석민이가 '그럼 서점에 가는 김에 나 만화책 사줘'라고 했어요.
Junsoo: 석민 said then “While you’re going to the book store, get me a comic book.”
Mihyeon: 지윤이가 '가는 김에 컴퓨터도 좀 보려고'라고 했어요.
Junsoo: 지윤 said “I’m going to take a look at some computers while I’m there.”
Mihyeon: 석민이가 '그럼 가는 김에 내 생일선물도'라고 했죠.
Junsoo: And 석민 said “Then while you’re going there, get me a birthday present.”
Hyunwoo: 네, 좋아요. 미현씨, 그러면 다 이해하셨겠지만, 혹시 아직 이해가 덜 되신분들을 위해서 설명 시작한 김에 예문을 좀 더 주세요.
Mihyeon: 네 좋아요. 현우야, 우리집에 온 김에 청소 좀 해.
Junsoo: “현우 while you’re at my house, anyway, clean up.”
Mihyeon: 준수씨, 우리집에 온 김에 차라도 한 잔하고 가세요.
Junsoo: Yes, I will do that. She said “준수, while you’re at my house, have a cup of tea at least.”
Mihyeon: 서울에 가는 김에 현우도 만나려고.
Hyunwoo: Why?
Junsoo: Okay. She said “I’m planning to meet 현우 while I’m in Seoul.”
Hyunwoo: Okay, that’s good. Anybody is welcomed to contact me and meet me in Seoul if you ever come to Korea, except –
Junsoo: Except.
Hyunwoo: 미현. 미현씨 농담이에요. Thank you for all the great info and before we finish, I’d like to introduce a very interesting phrase or expression often used together with this pattern ~은 김에 or also used just on its own. What do you think I’m thinking about, 미현?
Mihyeon: 혹시 '겸사겸사' 아니에요?
Hyunwoo: 어, 네, 맞아요.어떻게 알았어요?. 준수, what does it mean?
Junsoo: 겸사겸사 can be used like an adverb and inserted in the middle of the sentence and it can also be used as a said expression on its own. It means “to do two things at the same time to save energy and time”.
Mihyeon: 서점에 간 김에 겸사겸사 책을 좀 사왔어.
Junsoo: “While I was at the bookstore, I bought some books as well.”
Hyunwoo: As you can see, in the sentence that 준수 just said, the expression 겸사겸사 didn’t make it into the English translation because it doesn’t really translate literally into English. It has the same meaning as the grammar pattern ~는 김에, but if you had it, you sentence has more flavor. 미현씨, 이렇게 설명하면 맞나요?
Mihyeon: 네, 아주 잘했습니다.
