INTRODUCTION |
Mihyeon: ์๋
ํ์ธ์. ๋ฏธํ์
๋๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: My name is Hyunwoo. Use Korean To Make Your Wishes Come True. |
Mihyeon: ์ฐ์ ๋ฒ์จ ๋ง์ง๋ง ๋ ์จ์ด์์? |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค. This is a final lesson. ์์ฌ์์. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ์ ๋. |
Hyunwoo: But I hope our listeners enjoyed the lower intermediate lessons so far. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ์ ๋์. |
Hyunwoo: But itโs not over yet. We have a very interesting conversation and a very, very important grammar point in todayโs lesson as well. |
Mihyeon: ์ข์์. ์ค๋ ๋ญ ๋ฐฐ์ธ ๊ฑฐ์์? |
Hyunwoo: Today we would learn how to say I wish. We learned one way to say this already. Something, something ๊ธฐ๋ฅผ ๋ฐ๋ผ๋ค but this one is less direct and more colloquial though you canโt say one of them is better than the other but todayโs pattern is really, really common and itโsโฆ |
Mihyeon: ์/์/์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: Okay letโs get right into the dialogue. Todayโs dialogue is the second half of the conversation between the shocked doctor and the crazy, brave patient. |

(14)Doctor: What? No. No! Goodbye then. Next patient please! |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Hyunwoo: I donโt know anybody around me who does skydiving as a hobby but I donโt think anyone would go skydiving again with broken legs. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ๊ทธ๋์ ์์ฌ ์ ์๋์ด ๊ฐ์ง ๋ง๋ผ๊ณ ํ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah she was advising not to go by saying, I wish you wouldnโt go. We will study exactly what she said in the grammar section and for now, letโs go to the vocab. |
VOCAB LIST |
Hyunwoo: ์ฒซ ๋ฒ์งธ ๋จ์ด๋ ๋ญ์์? |
Mihyeon: ์ด |
Hyunwoo: Luck. |
Mihyeon: ์ด [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ด [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Whatโs good luck? |
Mihyeon: ํ์ด |
Hyunwoo: And how do you say I wish you good luck? |
Mihyeon: ํ์ด์ ๋น์ด์. ์น๊ตฌํํ
๋ ์ด...ํ์ด์ ๋น์ด ์๋๋ฉด ํ์ด์ ๋น๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah and you can also say that your luck is good or bad. In other words, you are lucky or unlucky by saying ์ด์ด ์ข๋ค or ์ด์ด ๋์๋ค good or bad. So how do you say I was lucky? |
Mihyeon: ์ด์ด ์ข์์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: And I was unlucky. |
Mihyeon: ์ด์ด ๋๋นด์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Okay. ๋ค์ ๋จ์ด๋? |
Mihyeon: ๋ซ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: To recover, to heal. |
Mihyeon: ๋ซ๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋ซ๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: And the ใ
in the verb ๋ซ๋ค is dropped when itโs conjugated in the present tense. So if you want to say I recover, itโs ๋์์ and how do you say I healed or I recovered. |
Mihyeon: ๋์์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah so if you want to ask someone, have you recovered from the cold. |
Mihyeon: ๊ฐ๊ธฐ ๋์์ด์? |
Hyunwoo: Okay. Next word. |
Mihyeon: ๋น๋ถ๊ฐ |
Hyunwoo: For the time being, for a little while. |
Mihyeon: ๋น๋ถ๊ฐ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋น๋ถ๊ฐ [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: This word is used when you are talking about your plan about something that you are going to do or not going to do. So if you want to say, I am not going to come here for a while, how do you say that? |
Mihyeon: ๋น๋ถ๊ฐ ์ ์ฌ ๊ฑฐ์์. |
Hyunwoo: And that means I am not going to come here for the time being until there is a change in the circumstances or until there is a change of mind. Okay ๋ค ๋ฒ์งธ ๋จ์ด๋? |
Mihyeon: ํด์ |
Hyunwoo: Rest, break. |
Mihyeon: ํด์ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ํด์ [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Yeah and this word ํด์ is often used with the verb ์ทจํ๋ค right, to obtain. So in this dialogue as well, the doctor used the expression ํด์์ ์ทจํ๋ค and you can use this word ํด์ to say something like 5-minute break, 10-minute break and thatโs 5๋ถ๊ฐ ํด์, 10๋ถ๊ฐ ํด์. |
Mihyeon: 5๋ถ๊ฐ ํด์ |
Hyunwoo: 5-minute break. |
Mihyeon: 10๋ถ๊ฐ ํด์ |
Hyunwoo: 10-minute break. Okay without a break, letโs go on to the next word. |
Mihyeon: ํด์์ ์ข ์ทจํฉ์๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: ์ ๋ผ์. ๋ค์ ๋จ์ด ํด์ผ ๋ผ์. |
Mihyeon: ์ ์ ๋ฐ. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ง์ง๋ง ๋จ์ด๋๊น. Whatโs the last word? |
Mihyeon: ๋ค์น๋ค |
Hyunwoo: To get hurt or to get injured. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค์น๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋ค์น๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: And I want to say to everyone, be careful not to get hurt or injured in any case ๋ค์น์ง ๋ง์ธ์ and if you get hurt ๋ค์น๋ฉด, go see your doctor right away ๋ฐ๋ก ๋ณ์์ ๊ฐ์ธ์. I used to get hurt a lot from my hobby and I never went to the hospital but ์ง๊ธ ํํํด์. I am regretting it now. |
Mihyeon: ๊ทผ๋ฐ ํ์ฐ์จ๋ ์ ์ํ ์ฒ ํ์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. |
Hyunwoo: I used to. I wanted to look really cool you know even when I got hurt. ๋ค์ณค์ ๋๋ I donโt go screaming ์, ์ํ right but donโt get hurt ๊ทธ๊ฒ ์ ์ผ ์ข์์. Thatโs the best and now, letโs go to the grammar. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ์ข์ต๋๋ค. |
Lesson focus
|
Hyunwoo: Todayโs grammar point is ์/์/์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ๋ค and this is the grammatical structure that expresses a wish or a hope but in a less direct way and just like when the English verb to wish is used, the conjugated structure of the verb in Korean is also usually in the past tense and constructing a sentence is very simple too. To the verb stem, you just add ์/์/์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ๋ค. So how do you say, to come? |
Mihyeon: ์ค๋ค |
Hyunwoo: So how do you change the verb ์ค๋ค to the past tense? |
Mihyeon: ์๋ค |
Hyunwoo: And now, how do you say I wish you would come? |
Mihyeon: ์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Okay good and how about to do? |
Mihyeon: ํ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: And the past tense |
Mihyeon: ํ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: And I wish you would do |
Mihyeon: ํ์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: ์ข์์. Then how was this structure used in todayโs dialogue ์ค๋ ๋ํ์์๋ ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์ฐ์์ด์? |
Mihyeon: ์์ฌ ์ ์๋์ด ๋งํ์ด์. ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah the doctor said, I hope you will get better soon or I wish you would get better soon. |
Mihyeon: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์์ฌ ์ ์๋์ด ๋ค์ ์ ํ์
จ์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ๋๋ฐ์...๋ผ๊ณ ํ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah the doctor also said, I wish you wouldnโt or I hope you wonโt and if you remember from one of our previous lessons, another way of saying I hope or I wish is something, something ๊ธฐ๋ฅผ ๋ฐ๋ผ๋ค but this is more laidback and you are just wishing. You are not particularly mentioning to the other person that you are talking to but here if you use ์/์/์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์ or ์/์/์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด you are actually talking to the other person. You are delivering message. |
Mihyeon: ๋ง์์. ์ ๊ฐ ํ์ฐ์จ ์ ๋ฅผ ๋์์ฃผ๊ธฐ๋ฅผ ๋ฐ๋ผ์๋ผ๊ณ ๋งํ๋ฉด |
Hyunwoo: Yeah if you say that, itโs a little bit formal and it doesnโt sound very strong. So if you want to say, I want you to help me or I hope you will help me or I wish you would help me, what would you say? |
Mihyeon: ํ์ฐ์จ, ์ ๋ฅผ ๋์์คฌ์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: And if you say that, itโs less direct than saying ํ์ฐ์จ, ์ ๋ฅผ ๋์์ฃผ์ธ์ right, itโs not as urging as just saying ํด ์ฃผ์ธ์ but you are still very polite and you still deliver your message. So ๋ฏธํ์จ I hope you will give us some more example sentences. ์๋ฌธ์ ๋ค์ด ์คฌ์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค. ๋ด์ผ ๋น๊ฐ ์ ์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: I wish it wouldnโt rain tomorrow. |
Mihyeon: ๊ฟ์ด์์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: I wish I was dreaming right? ์ข์์. ์ข์ ์๋ฌธ๋ค ๊ฐ์ฌํ๊ณ ์. |
Mihyeon: ์๋๋๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค. So okay thatโs it for today and thatโs it for the lower intermediate lessons. ๊ณ ๋ง์ต๋๋ค. ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ๋ฒ์จ ๋ง์ง๋ง ๋ ์จ์ด๋ผ๋... I canโt believe it. |
Outro
|
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ๊ทธ๋ ๋ค์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah and we hope our listeners have picked up a lot of useful expressions and also learned how to actually use them and as you know, listening to podcast lessons is very good for learning new things but you always need to practice, practice and practice what you learned. So I hope our listeners will do that and keep studying Korean. ๊ณ์ ํ๊ตญ์ด ๊ณต๋ถ๋ฅผ ํ์
จ์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ๊ณ์ ํ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค. |
Mihyeon: ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ ๋๋๋๊น ์กฐ๊ธ ์ฌํผ์. |
Hyunwoo: Well on the contrary, I am excited. ์ ๋ ์ ๋์. |
Mihyeon: ์์? |
Hyunwoo: Because it means we have new lesson types, new seasons and new lessons coming up soon. |
Mihyeon: ์, ๋ง์์. ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ๋ ์๋ก์ด ๋ ์จ์ด ๊ธฐ๋ค๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์์ฃ ? |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค. |
Mihyeon: ์, ๊ธฐ๋ ๋ผ์. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ์ ๋์. I am looking forward to them too. So ์ฌ๋ฌ๋ถ, ๊ทธ๋์ ์ ๋ง ๊ฐ์ฌํ์ต๋๋ค. ์๋ก์ด ๋ ์จ์์ ๋ง๋์. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ์ ๋ ๊ฐ์ฌ๋๋ฆฝ๋๋ค. ๊ทธ๋ผ ์ฌ๋ฌ๋ถ, ์๋
ํ ๊ณ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ์๊ณ ํ์
จ์ต๋๋ค. |
