The Vice Guide to North Korea (documentary)

Postby kyuree » April 25th, 2009 10:31 am

There's a documentary on an American journalist visiting North Korea on VBS.tv

It has 14 parts but each part has a length between 3 and 6 minutes. You can even skip the add that shows up before each video.
It's quite interesting.

Part 13 is on the mass gymnastics/Arirang games

Tell me what you thought about the documentary.
unfortunately having half a set of Korean genes doesn't come w/ a language gene

Yea, that one was pretty good, but there are a lot of the same type of photologs/documentaries that are all very similar because there usually can only be one tour; especially for Americans because they're on very restricted entry. There are two amazing documentaries by a British filmmaker that I highly recommend. It goes into parts no other video has gone.

Crossing the Line: about an American defector that still lives there
State of Mind: follows two girls as they prepare for the mass games

DVDs are by KINO International.

Both are absolutly stunning.

I wonder what Euna Lee and Laura Ling were filming before their arrest. They're facing 8 years of imprisonment for illegal entry and hostile actions. My theory is that the North Koreans wanted to pump them for information about refugees living in China in order to better allow Chinese authorities to repatriate them in addition to intending to use the two American journalists as leverage against their adversaries.

I hope that they are released, so they can be free and tell what really happened.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with information about China (especially since they're American), but rather a bargaining chip. They were convieniently arrested right before the rocket launch along with that South Korean in Kaesong. They have a habit of kidnapping people before these types of events or 'arresting' them. That way, the US and S. Korea will think twice about their speech to NK and perhaps let a few things slide in hopes of negotiating their release
