This was the last part of our chapter test for Korean 4 at Los Angeles Community College:
'Write 5 -7 sentences describing how birthdays are celebrated in Korea'
I wrote:
한국에서는 아기의 첫 생일인 “돌”과 어른의 60 세 되는 “환갑” 생신 그리고 70 세 되는 “고희” 생신을 아주 툭별한 것으로 여깁니다. 그래서 이 세 생일을 축하하기 위해서 대부분 큰 잔치를 차리지만 일반 생일이면 주로 가족과 함께 간단히 지냅니다. 그런데 큰 잔치나 작은 생일 상에 빠짐없이 미역국을 올리는 풍습이 있습니다. 이 풍습의 유래를 살펴보면 한국 어머니들이 출산한 다음에 기운을 되찾으려고 그리고 젖이 잘 나오도록 영양분이 풍부한 미역국을 먹는 데서 비롯되었습니다. 그러니까 한국사람들은 자기가 낳아주신 어머니를 기념하기 위해 생일에 미역국을 꼭 먹어야 한답니다. 그러나 한국 생일에 미역국만 먹는 게 아니라, 생일 떡도 먹고, 다양한 다른 음식을 즐기고 특히 요즘에는 서양식으로 케이크 가지고 파티를 하기도 합니다.
... overall I got a pretty good grade on the exam --I made some stupid mistakes on some easy questions - but I'll blame that on the teacher, she made 3 announcements during the test and that made it hard to concentrate. If you ask me the total of 4 minutes and 30 seconds (I kept track) she talked during the test should have warranted giving us that much extra time. Oh well... 96.8% is acceptable right? (bragging hehe :very happy: ) --if it had gone down to 95% or below I would have protested.
