Bad jokes

Postby sebastiancayne7618 » July 24th, 2011 1:29 pm

Hello,

I have recently seen the expression 썰렁한 농담 referring to a bad joke. If my understanding is correct, it means bad in the sense of non-funny / lame. I was wondering what would be the Korean expression to mean an inappropriate / bad-taste joke.

Cheers

Hi, Sebastian

썰렁하다. means 'to be cold' literally. Korean people use this verb for jokes when the joke is not funny enough and more likely serious, because that kind of jokes will freeze everyone around. That's why it means it is not funny.

However, if some jokes are not funny and inappropriate (more likely offensive), you can say '부적절한 농담(Bujeokjeolhan nongdam)'. 부적절한 just means 'inappropriate', and there are not phrases for the situation.

I wish this have helped you. Thanks.

Jaehwi.
