신기생...뎐?

Postby orbiter » June 7th, 2011 10:24 am

신기생뎐 is the title of an SBS korean drama series.

I've never come across the word "뎐" before, and I can't find it in the dictionary. What does it mean?

I've also heard it being pronounced as "전". Why, isn't it "dyeon"...?

전(傳) was written as 뎐 back in 15th century Korean.
I'm not sure whether they pronounced it as 'dyeon' or 'jeon' though,
the title, 신(新:new)기생뎐 gives us the feeling of an old story.

Hope this helps.
Sean.

Hi Sean,

Thank you for the insight; that's quite a witty title then, to put "신" in the beginning yet use the old version of 전.

Very interesting! If only the drama was as interesting. haha :)
