안녕하새요...

Postby joe78 » February 12th, 2009 10:15 am

Hi, i'm new here,my name is joe, and i've just started learning korean. This is more like a comment and a question. So when a person says "안녕하새요" I've heard variations...through videos, different learning cd's and websites. Is it just me or are there different variations of it?

Hi Joe!

Welcome to the site!

To answer your question, YES.

There are many different ways that people greet each other
(as a variation of 안녕히세요)

안녕! (intimate level used for close friends, family, and people younger than you. if you haven't picked up on the politeness levels you will catch on as you study here)

안녕히세요? (regular, polite greeting.... you can always use this one safely. using 안녕 above in the wrong setting is to be avoided)

안녕히십니까? (the same sentence in the most formal way possible. nice for making a good impression, greeting your boss, grandmother, or another highly esteemed person)

There are also myriad other ways to greet someone that you might have seen subtitled as "hello," but those all mean slightly different things. Also, regional dialects can come into play as well.

oops! typo, austin.. all of your 하's became 히's. ㅋㅋㅋ

it should be 안녕하세요 and 안녕하십니까 (i know you are well aware of this austin, i'm just writing it in case joe78 comes to read it before you can fix it ^^)

you might also be getting confused with goodbye, because it sounds very similar. there are a few ways to say goodbye (that sound like 안녕하세요).

안녕히가세요 - is a polite way to say goodbye to someone who is leaving, or if you are both leaving.

안녕히계세요 - is a polite way to say goodbye when you are the one leaving and the other person is staying where they are.

of course there are many other ways to say goodbye as well.

(:
