말이다

Can someone tell me what this phrase means: 말이다.

An example from my book is:
미안해요. 오늘도 또 늦었어요.
집에서 일찍 출발했는데도 말이에요.

[manyakumi]

There is no special meaning.
You can use this word to make people paying attention to you.
If you add 말이다 to the end of your words, people who listen to you may think your sentence is not end.


그런데요,
그런데 말이예요,

하지만요,
하지만 말이죠,

내가 어제 그 친구를 봤는데
내가 (말이지) 어제 그 친구를 봤는데 (말이야)
I saw him yesterday, (and.../but...)
