Culture Class (?) Korean Names

Postby matthew254 » May 18th, 2008 3:58 am

This was always taxing for me when I was first starting out learning. I think it would make a great newbie/beginner level entry to the culture class repertoire. There could be points on:
difference between male and female names
    naming structures
whether foreigners should adopt Korean names
how to "koreanize" a foreigner's name
the elusive "Lee" "Rhee" "이" surname
name order and perhaps why (last, first, middle)
traditional naming concepts of siblings sharing given/first names
uncommon names in Korea and why
    examples of Japanese influence
    subtle differences between certain names
    pitfalls to avoid for travelers/newcomers
the proper use of basic titles
any real meaning from names? hanja based?
korean celebrities and why/how they choose their stage names
marriage and whether that changes your name
address the added vowel sound at the end of names during 반말 (and when to use it)
the -씨 suffix (including the taboo associated with surnames)

a few memories come to mind. close similarities for me were between 윤하 (cute Korean singer) and 윤아 (the....OTHER cute Korean singer)
another painfully funny memory was from an American who referred to an 아저씨 named 김한독 (or something, I can't quite remember) as "Mister Duck"

anyways, hope this takes!

Actually, we're going to do a barrage of culture lessons later in the year, and we're starting to collect ideas right now... This'll definitely make it into the list ;)

Bringing this back up... I'm thinking about focusing the culture class on the origins of Korean names. I think that might be pretty interesting. There are several different types of Kim's, Lee's and Park's out there. And I think I'll have to do a little research for this one as well...

What do you think?

I'd like it very much. I'm interested in names to begin with.
