2008 Olympics

Postby dewnyc » August 10th, 2008 12:52 am

It's that excitement that I get every 2 years.
Are any of you watching the Olympics taking place right now?
Which sports and/or athletes will you be watching?
I guess we can talk about events here as they unfold.

For Korean athletes, I'm sure swimmer Park Tae-Hwan will be among the most-watched. I also hope to see some of the table tennis, where Ryu Seung Min is the defending men's singles champion.

It's nice that my cable TV system (in the US) has an NBC Olympic Korean Channel, showing an MBC broadcast. On there, I saw Choi Min Ho win South Korea's first Gold Medal, in judo.

Park Tae Hwan won the gold metal!! I'm not sure which event it was...maybe 400?  but he was amazing!! His time 3:41:86 I think :)

He was at the olympics 4 years ago when he was 14 but fell in the water before the race began and was disqualified! How embarressing and how that must have sucked for him! But now that he's back, he certainly didn't let his home country down!

I saw both Choi Min Ho's Judo match and Park Tae Hwan's swimming (yes, 400m^^, rooraa) match, and they were AMAZING!! :)

Park Tae Hwan is awesome. He had the entire nation's expectations upon his shoulders, having become such a big commercial film star and all, but he did it! Great job. :)

I don't normally like sports but every time the Olympics start that is all I want to watch. I spent most of yesterday and today tuned into the KBS watching and not understanding the commentary (my Korean is not that good yet) but still loving it.I really looking forward to watching the taekwondo matches when they start on the 19th.

Add a Gold in the archery women's team competition, to make it 6 in a row for Korea in that category.
It makes me think of the movie "The Host" :D

Being Australian, Is it OK if I mention the amazing turn around in the womens hokey? Korea 4 - 0 Australia at about half time, Korea 4 -5 Australia at full time.

Singapore beat Korea in the womens table tennis team event semi-finals. I'm really sorry that our win had to be over Korea, but this is REALLY very significant for Singapore, because this will be our first medal since 1960!!

Korea will next face the perhaps unlikely opponent of USA, with the winner advancing to the Bronze Medal match. I'll be following that with great interest. If USA can somehow beat Korea, and then either Japan or Hong Kong, it would be the country's first ever Olympic medal in table tennis. Singapore beat USA in the first match of the preliminaries.

Also, in archery, it's too bad both the men's and women's individual finals ended up with the Korean archer losing by 1 point, but the matches sure were exciting to watch.
