Jaehwi: 이재휘입니다. Welcome back to KoreanClass101.com. Making A Good First Impression In A Korean Business Meeting
Kyejin: 이번 레슨에서는 준영씨가 비즈니스 미팅을 하기 위해 고객이 다니는 회사로 찾아가서 만나는 내용을 들어볼 겁니다.
Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’re going to learn expressions that you can use for a first business meeting.
Kyejin: 이번 레슨에서는 어떤 대화를 듣게 되나요?
Jaehwi: In this dialogue, Joonyeong will be meeting his clients face-to-face in the lobby and then a meeting room in their office.
Kyejin: 대화는 회사 로비와 회의실에서 이루어집니다.
Jaehwi: They are meeting each other for the first time, so they will be using formal Korean.
Okay, let’s listen to the conversation.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jaehwi: 이번 대화에서는 디자인 회사에 다니는 준영씨가 고객이 다니는 회사에 방문하는 이야기가 나왔네요. 한국에서는 직접 얼굴을 보고 미팅을 하는 일이 더 많은 것 같아요.
Kyejin: 아무래도 이메일이나 전화로 상대방과 이야기하는 것보다는 직접 얼굴을 보고 이야기해야 믿을 수 있다고 생각하는 사람들이 많은 것 같아요. 그리고 많은 회사들이 서울에 있기 때문에 방문하기도 어렵지 않구요.
Jaehwi: 그럼 한국에서 다른 사람의 회사에 방문할 때 어떤점을 조금 더 조심하면 좋을까요?
Kyejin: 가장 기본은 복장인 것 같아요. 이메일이나 전화로 서로 친해졌다고 하더라도 공식적인 미팅이 있을 때에는 정장을 입고 가는 게 무엇보다 중요하겠죠?
Jaehwi: Yes, that’s right. I think it’s important to dress in a formal way when you have a first business meeting, even though you’ve already got to know the person over email or the phone.
Kyejin: 그리고 상대방의 회사에 찾아갔을 때에는 로비나 회사 입구에서 상대방에게 미리 전화를 거는 것이 좋습니다. 사무실로 바로 찾아가는 경우라도 말이죠.
Jaehwi: 그래야 상대방이 미리 준비하고 기다릴 수 있으니까요.
Kyejin: 자, 그럼 이번 레슨의 주요 단어들 알아볼까요?
Jaehwi: Okay, onto the vocab.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Jaehwi: Let's have a closer look at the usage at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s the first word?
Kyejin: 와중
Jaehwi: although, while, in the middle of (honorific)
Kyejin: 보통 이런 의미로 말할 때에는 ‘동안'이라는 단어는 자주 사용하죠? 예를 들어서 ‘집에 가는 동안에'
Jaehwi: while I’m going home.
Kyejin: 같이 말이죠. 하지만 비즈니스 미팅을 하는 것처럼 보다 formal 한 상황에서는 ‘와중'이라는 단어를 대신 사용할 수 있습니다.
Jaehwi: 예문을 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: ‘기다리는 와중에..’
Jaehwi: It means “While waiting for someone.”
Kyejin: ‘기다리는 동안에'라는 같은 의미이지만, ‘와중'이라는 단어를 사용하면 보다 formal 한 이미지를 줄 수 있습니다. 그래서 이번 대화처럼 비즈니스 미팅을 하거나 보고를 할 때에는 이 단어를 사용하는 경우가 많이 있습니다.
Jaehwi: 특히 ‘기다리시다' 혹은 ‘바쁘시다'와 같이 honorific particle “시”가 들어있는 경우에는 ‘와중'을 사용하는게 더 자연스럽습니다.
Kyejin: 예를 들어서 ‘바쁘시다'라는 동사를 사용할 때에는 ‘바쁘신 와중에' 라고 하는 게 ‘바쁘신 동안에'라고 이야기하는 것보다 더 자연스러운 것처럼 말이죠.
Jaehwi: Okay, what’s the next word?
Kyejin: 본론
Jaehwi: “Topic”, literally the body of a discussion.
Kyejin: ‘본’은 main 이라는 의미의 단어이고, ‘론'은 discussion 이라는 의미의 단어입니다.
Jaehwi: 그래서 ‘본론'은 main of the discussion 의미로 Topic 이라는 의미로 사용됩니다.
Kyejin: 이번 대화내용을 보면 ‘본론으로 들어가다'라는 표현이 나왔었죠?
Jaehwi: Right. This literally means ‘To get into the body of the discussion’ You can translate it as ‘To start talking about the topic’
Kyejin: 이 표현은 회의를 하는 자리에서 자주 사용합니다. 간단하게 인사를 한 다음에 본격적으로 주제에 대해서 이야기할 때.. ‘본론으로 들어갈까요?’ 와 같이 사용합니다.
Jaehwi: 참고로 Conclusion이라는 의미를 가진 ‘결론'이라는 단어가 있습니다. ‘결’은 the end라는 뜻인데요, 그래서 ‘결론'은 conclusion or literally ‘the end of a discussion’ 이라는 뜻입니다.
Kyejin: 본론은 topic, 결론은 conclusion 이라는 의미라는 점 잘 기억해두세요.
Jaehwi: Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’ll learn expressions you can use in a first business meeting.
Kyejin: 비즈니스 미팅을 할 때에는 무엇보다 첫인상이 중요한데요. 지금 소개해드릴 표현들을 잘 기억해두시면 좋은 첫인상 first impression 을 만들 수 있을겁니다.
Jaehwi: Okay, then first, what are the expressions that people use when they see each other for the first time?
Kyejin: 보통 안녕하세요, 아니면 안녕하십니까. 라고 인사한 다음에 이렇게 이야기합니다. “오래 기다리게 해드려서 죄송합니다.”
Jaehwi: “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”
Kyejin: 또는 이런 표현도 사용할 수 있습니다. “오시느라 고생하셨습니다.”
Jaehwi: “You must have had a hard time coming all the way here.” These expressions are the way to show their appreciations for you because you came all the way to visit, no matter how long you waited for. 상대방에게서 이런 인사를 들었을 때에는 어떻게 대답하면 될까요?
Kyejin: 그런 경우에는 간단하게 ‘아닙니다'
Jaehwi: No I didn’t.
Kyejin: 혹은 ‘별말씀을요'
Jaehwi: Please don’t mention it.
Kyejin: 와 같이 이야기하면 됩니다.
Jaehwi: After having a conversation using the expressions, you can introduce yourself to the other.
Kyejin: 평소 대화할 때에는 ‘저는 김계진입니다'와 같이 ‘입니다'라는 단어를 사용하죠? 하지만 비즈니스 미팅처럼 formal 한 상황에서는 ‘-이라고 합니다'라는 표현을 사용할 수 있습니다.
Jaehwi: 이번 대화에 나온 표현을 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: ‘ILL 여행사의 홍보부에 다니는 이은희라고 합니다.’
Jaehwi: “I'm Eunhee Lee from ILL Travel's Public Relations department.” In the sentence, we used ‘이라고 합니다' which means ‘to be called.’ Since it sounds more indirect than the word 입니다 which means ‘to be’, it sounds more polite when introducing yourself.
Kyejin: 그리고 자기 소개를 할 때는 꼭 자기 회사와 부서 이름을 이야기해야합니다.
Jaehwi: That’s right. You should introduce your company’s name and the name of the department you’re working in.
Kyejin: 자기소개가 끝나면 본격적으로 미팅의 주제, 본론에 대해서 이야기하면 되는데요. 그 전에 한국에서는 여러가지 표현을 사용해서 조금 더 분위기를 부드럽게 만들곤 합니다.
Jaehwi: 하나씩 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 바쁘신 와중에 시간 내주셔서 감사합니다.
Jaehwi: Thank you for taking the time to see me when you're so busy. 여기에 보면 아까 배웠던 ‘와중'이라는 단어가 사용되었네요.
Kyejin: “바쁘시다” 라는 표현이 polite한 단어이기 때문에 이 때에는 ‘동안'이 아니라 ‘와중'을 사용하는 게 더 자연스럽거든요.
Jaehwi: 또 다른 표현은 뭐가 있을까요?
Kyejin: 바쁘실텐데 번거롭게 해드려서 죄송합니다.
Jaehwi: I’m sorry for taking your time when you’re busy.
Kyejin: 이런 표현들을 미리 건넨 다음에 회의를 시작하면, 그렇지 않을 때보다 훨씬 더 편한 분위기에서 상대방과 이야기를 할 수 있을겁니다.
