INTRODUCTION
Kyejin: 안녕하세요 김계진입니다.
Jaehwi: 이재휘입니다.! Welcome back to KoreanClass101.com! You Need to Tell the Truth in Korean!
In this lesson you'll learn some expressions that mean “to tell the truth.”
Kyejin: 이번 레슨에서는 한국어로 진실을 말하는 법을 배워보겠습니다. 이 대화는 장성근 대리와 장대리의 옛 직장 상사 김상무 사이에 일어나는 대화입니다.
Jaehwi: The conversation takes place over the phone.
Kyejin: 장대리는 존대말로, 김상사는 반말로 이야기 합니다.
Jaehwi: Seongkeun will use formal Korean and Director Kim will use informal Korean. Let's listen to the conversation.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jaehwi: Kyejin, many different four-letter idioms are used in Korea, right?
Jaehwi: So it means ‘someone who thinks he’s the most valuable person in the entire world.’
Kyejin: 네 그래서 한국사람들은 이기적인 selfish 사람에게 이 표현을 자주 사용합니다.
Jaehwi: Then what about the idiom 우유부단?
Kyejin: 우유부단은 행동이 분명하지 못하고 결단력이 없는 사람을 두고 하는 말이예요.
Jaehwi: Very indecisive person! What about 외유내강?
Kyejin: 외유내강은 겉은 약하지만 속은 강하고 터프한 사람을 말해요.
Jaehwi: Just like you, right? In Korean, people often use these idioms to describe someone’s characters, so make sure to check the lesson notes to learn more about them. Okay, now onto the vocab.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Jaehwi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s the first phrase?
Kyejin: 신세를 지다.
Jaehwi: “to be indebted to”, or “to owe.”
Kyejin: 신세는 “debt” 이란 뜻으로 다른 사람에게 받은 도움이나 은혜를 뜻하는데요. 주로 동사 “지다”를 신세와 함께 써서 신세 지다라고 말합니다.
Jaehwi: “Debt”라는 의미로”빚” 이라는 단어도 있잖아요? 예를 들면 ‘나한테는 빚이 500만원이 있다.’처럼요. 빚과 신세는 어떻게 다른가요?
Kyejin: “빚” 이라는 은 주로 돈이나 물질적인 것에만 사용합니다. 하비만 “신세”는 어떤 사람에게 친절이나 호의를 받았을 때와 같이 보다 감정적인 빚 emotional debt 라는 의미입니다.
Jaehwi So if I happen to stay at someone’s house at night, I can say 오늘밤 신세 좀 지겠습니다, meaning “thank you for letting me stay over tonight. I’ll be indebted to you.” 다른 예문 있나요?
Kyejin: 나는 목사님께 큰 신세를 지었다.
Jaehwi: I’m greatly indebted to my pastor. 자, 그럼 다음 표현 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 사고치다
Jaehwi: to make trouble.
Kyejin: “사고”라는 단어는 ‘교통사고'와 같이 accident 라는 의미로 사용되지만, 또 다른 의미로 ‘trouble’ 이라는 의미로 사용합니다.
Jaehwi: 자, 그럼 예문 보실까요?
Kyejin: 사고치면 안돼.
Jaehwi: Don’t make any trouble.
Kyejin: 또 어떤 사람이 trouble-maker 인 경우에, “그 사람은 사고를 많이 치는 사람이다.” 라고 이야기할 수 있습니다.
Jaehwi: Ok, now on to the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’ll learn some expressions that mean “to tell the truth.” 자, 먼저 첫번째 표현 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 사실대로 말씀드리면..
Jaehwi: to tell the truth, honorific.
Kyejin: 이번 대화에서도 이런 문장이 나왔었죠? 사실대로 말씀드리면, 성격이 그렇게 좋지 않아요
Jaehwi: To tell the truth, he doesn’t have the best personality.
Kyejin: 여기서 ‘사실대로'는 as a truth.
Jaehwi: Stay as it is. In the phrase 그대로, 그 means it, and 대로 means ‘as’. You can see the word 대로 worked exactly the as same as the English word ‘as’ in this sentence. 또 다른 예문 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 나는 그녀를 있는 그대로 사랑한다.
Jaehwi: I love her as she is. 사랑 고백할 때 아주 좋은 표현이 될 수 있겠는데요.
Kyejin: 그리고 레슨에서 자주 들을 수 있는 이 표현에도 ‘대로'라는 조사가 들어갑니다. 문자 그대로.
Jaehwi: Literally.
Kyejin: 문자는 “letter” 란 뜻이구요 그대로는 “as it is,” 그러니까 “문자 그대로”는 “literally”란 의미를 가지는 표현이 되는거죠.
Jaehwi: 자, 그럼 원래 표현으로 돌아가서, ‘사실대로 말씀드리면'을 사용한 예문 하나 더 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 사실대로 말씀드리면 나는 대학을 나오지 못했습니다.
Jaehwi: To tell the truth, I didn’t graduate from university. 그리고 이번 레슨 대화에 “사실대로 말씀드리면” 과 비슷한 표현이 있었죠? 이번 대화에 나온 문장 읽어주시겠어요?
Kyejin: “솔직히 말씀드리면.. 그 친구 최근에 구조조정 대상자 명단에 들어갔거든요.”
Jaehwi: To be honest with you, he got put on the shortlist for getting let go after the restructuring.
Kyejin: “솔직히”는 “솔직하다” to be honest 라는 의미의 동사를 부사 adverb 로 만든 겁니다. 그래서 ‘honestly’라는 의미가 되는거죠.
Jaehwi: So 솔직히 말씀드리면 literally means ‘to tell you honestly.’ 예문 하나 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 솔직히 말씀드리면 매우 부끄럽습니다.
Jaehwi: To be honest with you, I feel very ashamed. OR literally ‘to tell you honestly, I feel very ashamed.’

Outro

Jaehwi: Ok, that’s all for this lesson. Remember to check the lesson notes, and we’ll see you next time. Thanks for listening, bye!
Kyejin: 다음 시간에 만나요!
