INTRODUCTION
Gabriella: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
GRAMMAR POINT
Gabriella: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Where did you learn Korean?” In Korean this is
Kyejin: 어디에서 한국어를 배웠습니까? (Eodieseo hangugeoreul baewotseumnikka?)
Gabriella: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 어디 (eodi)
Gabriella: meaning “where” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 어디 (eodi)
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디 (eodi)
{Pause}
Gabriella: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 에서 (eseo)
Gabriella: location particle meaning 'from', 'at', 'in.'
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 에서(eseo)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 에서(eseo)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디에서(eodieseo)
{pause}
Gabriella: Next is
Kyejin: 한국어(hangugeo)
Gabriella: meaning ‘Korean language.’
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 한국어(hangugeo)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 한국어(hangugeo)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디에서 한국어 (eodieseo hangugeo)
{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kyejin: 를 (reul)
Gabriella: the object marking particle.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 를(reul)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 를(reul)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 4 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디에서 한국어를 (eodieseo hagugeoreul)
{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kyejin: 배웠습니 (baewotseumni)
Gabriella: This is the verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 배웠습니다 (baewotseumnida)
Gabriella: meaning ‘learned’ or ‘have learned’ in Korean.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 배웠습니(baewotseumni)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 배웠습니(baewotseumni)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 5 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 어디에서 한국어를 배웠습니 (eodieseo hangugeoreul baewotseumni)

Kyejin: 어디에서 한국어를 배웠습니까? (Eodieseo hangugeoreul baewotseumnikka?)
{pause}
Gabriella: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Where did you learn Korean?”
Kyejin: 학교에서 배웠습니다. (Hakgyoeseo baewotseumnida.)
Gabriella: "I learned it in school.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kyejin: (Slow) 학교에서 배웠습니다. (Hakgyoeseo baewotseumnida.)
{pause}
Gabriella: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is:
Kyejin: 학교 (hakgyo)
Gabriella: meaning “school.”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 학교(hakgyo)
Gabriella: Now repeat
Kyejin: 학교(hakgyo)

(regular) 한국에서(hangugeseo)

Gabriella: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “in school” with “in South Korea.” Say “I learned it in South Korea.”
{pause}

Hi 아린,

One other thing, when the sentence is polite, you need to use 저는 instead of 나는:

-->저는 인터넷으로 배웠습니다.

Sincerely,

Lyn
