INTRODUCTION
Gabriella: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Gabriella: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How long have you been studying Korean?” In Korean this is
Kyejin: 얼마 동안 한국어를 공부했습니까?
Gabriella: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 얼마
Gabriella: meaning “how long”, “how many”, “how much” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 얼마
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 얼마
{Pause}
Gabriella: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 동안
Gabriella: meaning “while”, “during” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 동안
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 동안
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 얼마 동안
{pause}
Gabriella: This phrase means ‘how long’ in English. And after that
Kyejin: 한국어
Gabriella: meaning “Korean” in English
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 한국어
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 한국어
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 얼마 동안 한국어
{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kyejin: 를
Gabriella: the object marking particle.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 를
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 를
(o)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 4 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 얼마 동안 한국어를
{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kyejin: 공부했습니
Gabriella: This is the verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 공부했습니다
Gabriella: meaning ‘studied’ or ‘have studied’ in Korean.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 공부했습니
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 공부했습니
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 5 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 얼마 동안 한국어를 공부했습니
{pause}
Gabriella: And next
Kyejin: 까
(ka)
Gabriella: the question marking particle.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 까
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 까
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kyejin: 얼마 동안 한국어를 공부했습니까?
Gabriella: Master the following pattern and responses to the question “How long have you been studying Korean?”
Kyejin: 한달 동안 공부했습니다.
Gabriella: “I’ve studied for 1 month.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kyejin: (Slow) 한달 동안 공부했습니다.{pause}
Gabriella: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:

{Pause}
Gabriella: And after that

(desu)
Gabriella: And next
Kyejin: 공부했습니
Gabriella: The verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 공부했습니다.
Gabriella: meaning ‘studied’ in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 공부했습니
Gabriella: Now repeat.

(desu)

Kyejin: 다
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the speaker say, “I’ve studied for 1 month.,” and then repeat.

Gabriella: 2 years
Kyejin: (slow) 이년 (regular) 이년
Gabriella: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “2 years.”
Kyejin: 이년 동안 공부했습니다.
Gabriella: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “1 month” with “2 years.” Say “I have studied for 2 years.”
{pause}
Kyejin: 이년 동안 공부했습니다.
Gabriella: To expand on the pattern, replace “2 years” with “half a year.”
Kyejin: 반년
Gabriella: half a year
Kyejin: (slow) 반년 (regular) 반년
Gabriella: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “half a year.”
Kyejin: 반년 동안 공부했습니다.
Gabriella: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the “2 years” with “half a year.” Say “I have studied for half a year.”
{pause}
Kyejin: 반년 동안 공부했습니다.
Gabriella: To expand on the pattern, replace “half a year” with “10 years.”
Kyejin: 십년
Gabriella: 10 years
Kyejin: (slow) 십년 (regular) 십년
Gabriella: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 10 years
Kyejin: 십년 동안 공부했습니다.
Gabriella: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “half a year” with “10 years.” Say “I have studied for 10 years.”
{pause}
Kyejin: 십년 동안 공부했습니다.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for posting. If you want to say 'It's my first time studying here', it would be:

여기서처음으로동안공부했습니다.

-->여기에서 처음으로 공부했습니다.

~동안 is used to describe a certain period of time in which you did something so you would not use it in the sample sentence you provided.

Cheers,

Lyn
