안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo)
Hello and welcome to Korean survival phrases brought to you by KoreanClass101.com, this course is designed to equip you with the language skills and knowledge to enable you to get the most out of your visit to Korea. You will be surprised at how far a little Korean will go. Now, before we jump in, remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and there, you will find the accompanying PDF and additional info in the post. If you stop by, be sure to leave us the comment.
In Korea, the bus is an important means of transportation. However, before you get on the bus, you probably want to confirm if the bus is going to your destination. We can accomplish this by saying, will this bus go to and then add in a destination. In today’s lesson, we will use Seoul station. In Korean, station is 역 (yeok). One time slowly, 역 (yeok). Now one more time, 역 (yeok). So our location is 서울역 (seoulyeok) or Seoul station. So in Korean, does this bus go to Seoul station is 서울역 가요 (seoullyeok gayo)? Bus is inferred. So literally, this sentence is Seoul station go. Let’s break it down. 서울역 가요 (seoulyeok gayo)? The location is 서울역 (seoulyeok) which means Seoul Station. Let’s hear it one more time slowly, 서울역 (seoulyeok).
Once again, this is Seoul, the name of the station and 역 (yeok) the word for station. This is followed by 가요 (gayo) which in English is go. Let’s break it down. 가요 (gayo). Does this bus go to Seoul Station. So now that you know this phrase, before you get on a bus, you can make sure you are going to the right place. You can ask somebody at the bus stop, the driver, the convenience store lady, the hotdog vendor, whoever you want. Make sure 서울역 가요 (seoulyeok gayo)? Now if you are going to a different location, the only thing you have to change in this phrase is the location. 가요 (gayo) stays the same.
So let’s try a different station. How about Gangnam Station. 강남역 가요 (gangnamyeok gayo)? Does this bus go to Gangnam Station? 강남역 가요 (gangnamyeok gayo)? This is literally Gangnam Station go. 강남역 가요 (gangnamyeok gayo)? Now, if you are taking a city bus, there is ways to make your trip a bit cheaper. If you go to a convenient store, you can pick up a transportation card or 교통카드 (gyotongkadeu). You can buy these at the convenient stores and add credit to them at the subway station. This will give you discounts if you are transferring from bus to subway or vice versa.
Also, it’s just an easier way to pay for your trips. So when you buy this, walk into the convenience store and say, 교통카드 (gyotongkadeu) which means transportation card and at the end, you can add the good old 주세요 (juseyo). 교통카드 주세요 (gyotongkadeu juseyo). Okay, to close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
Seoul Station - 서울역 (seoulyeok)
Does this bus go to Seoul station. Remember, bus is inferred. 서울역 가요 (seoulyeok gayo)?
Does this bus go to Gangnam station - 강남역 가요 (gangnamyeok gayo)?
A transportation card please - 교통카드 주세요 (gyotongkadeu juseyo).
All right, that’s going to do it for today. Remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment.
