INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 6. Using Prepositions of Place
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving the location of something.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "The laptop is in a room."
Lyn: 그 노트북은 방에 있어요. (geu noteubogeun bange isseoyo.)
Lyn: [slow] 그 노트북은 방에 있어요. (geu noteubogeun bange isseoyo.)
Eric: The pattern for giving the location of something has 4 elements. First, a phrase "the laptop."
Lyn: 노트북은 (noteubugeun).
Eric: Second, a noun "a room."
Lyn: 방 (bang).
Eric: Third, a location marking particle.
Lyn: 에 (e).
Eric: And last, a verb "to be, there is."
Lyn: 있어요 (isseoyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "The laptop is in a room."
Lyn: 그 노트북은 방에 있어요. (geu noteubugeun bange isseoyo.) [slow] 그 노트북은 방에 있어요. (geu noteubugeun bange isseoyo.) [normal] 그 노트북은 방에 있어요. (geu noteubugeun bange isseoyo.)
Eric: At the end of the sentence, we have...
Lyn: 있어요 (isseoyo)
Eric: This means “there is” or “there are." In this sentence, we also have a topic marking particle, which is…
Lyn: 은 (eun)
Eric: When you add it after the noun, you can clarify and emphasize the topic. That’s why it’s called a topic marking particle.
Lyn: 그 노트북은 방에 있어요. (geu noteubugeun bange isseoyo.)
Eric: So remember that when you want to give the location of something, simply say the topic and the location, and finish the sentence with
Lyn: 에 있어요 (e isseoyo).
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "The pencil is on the table." First, a phrase "the pencil."
Lyn: 연필은 (yeonpireun).
Eric: Second, a phrase, "above a desk."
Lyn: 책상 위 (chaeksang wi).
Eric: Third, a location marking particle.
Lyn: 에 (e).
Eric: And last, a verb, "to be, there is."
Lyn: 있어요 (isseoyo).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Lyn: 그 연필은 책상 위에 있어요. (geu yeonpireun chaeksang wie isseoyo.) [slow] 그 연필은 책상 위에 있어요. (geu yeonpireun chaeksang wie isseoyo.) [normal] 그 연필은 책상 위에 있어요. (geu yeonpireun chaeksang wie isseoyo.)
Eric: "The pencil is on the table."
[pause]
Lyn: 그 연필은 책상 위에 있어요. (geu yeonpireun chaeksang wie isseoyo.)
Eric: How do you say - "She is at home." To give you a hint, "home" in Korean is..
Lyn: 집 (jip). [slow] 집 (jip). [normal] 집 (jip).
Eric: “She is at home.”
[pause]
Lyn: 그녀는 집에 있어요. (Geunyeoneun jibe isseoyo.) [slow] 그녀는 집에 있어요. (Geunyeoneun jibe isseoyo.) [normal] 그녀는 집에 있어요. (Geunyeoneun jibe isseoyo.)
[pause]
