INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 5. Using Adjectives to Describe.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something using an adjective.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "The book is boring."
Lyn: ๊ทธ ์ฑ…์€ ์ง€๋ฃจํ•ด์š”. (geu chaegeun jiruhaeyo.)
Lyn: [slow] ๊ทธ ์ฑ…์€ ์ง€๋ฃจํ•ด์š”. (geu chaegeun jiruhaeyo.)
Eric: The pattern for describing something using an adjective has 3 elements. First, a phrase, "that book."
Lyn: ๊ทธ ์ฑ… (geu chaek).
Eric: Second, a topic marking particle.
Lyn: ์€ (eun).
Eric: Third, an adjective, "boring."
Lyn: ์ง€๋ฃจํ•ด์š” (jiruhaeyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "The book is boring."
Lyn: ๊ทธ ์ฑ…์€ ์ง€๋ฃจํ•ด์š”. (geu chaegeun jiruhaeyo.) [slow] ๊ทธ ์ฑ…์€ ์ง€๋ฃจํ•ด์š”. (geu chaegeun jiruhaeyo.) [normal] ๊ทธ ์ฑ…์€ ์ง€๋ฃจํ•ด์š”. (geu chaegeun jiruhaeyo.)
Eric: To be polite in Korean, you can end a sentence with the sentence ending...
Lyn: ์š” (yo)
Eric: But when you use this, make sure to check how the verb-stem ends. If the last syllable of the verb-stem has a vowel which has...
Lyn: ใ… (a) OR ใ…— (o)
Eric: โ€ฆ just addโ€ฆ
Lyn: ์š” (yo)
Eric: after the verb-stem and sayโ€ฆ
Lyn: ๋งŒ๋‚˜์š” (mannayo).
Eric: If the last syllable of the verb-stem doesn't have
Lyn: ใ… (a) or ใ…— (o)...
Eric: you need to add one syllable between the verb-stem and the sentence-ending, which isโ€ฆ
Lyn: ์–ด (eo)
Eric: So together, you can sayโ€ฆ
Lyn: ๋จน์–ด์š” (meogeoyo). ๋จน (meok)
Eric: And thereโ€™s one more. Lyn, can you explain more?
Lyn: If the verb is ํ•˜๋‹ค (hada), for example, ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•˜๋‹ค (gongbuhada), replace ํ•˜ (ha) with ํ•ด (hae) and add ์š” (yo) as in ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•ด์š” (gongbuhaeyo).
Lyn: ๊ทธ ์ฑ…์€ ์ง€๋ฃจํ•ด์š”. (geu chaegeun jiruhaeyo.)
Eric: So remember to check the verb-stem when you use the sentence-ending particle...
Lyn: ์š” (yo).
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "The tree is small." First, a phrase, "that tree."
Lyn: ๊ทธ ๋‚˜๋ฌด (geu namu).
Eric: Second, a topic marking particle.
Lyn: ๋Š” (neun).
Eric: Third, an adjective, "small."
Lyn: ์ž‘์•„์š” (jagayo).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Lyn: ๊ทธ ๋‚˜๋ฌด๋Š” ์ž‘์•„์š”. (geu namuneun jagayo.) [slow] ๊ทธ ๋‚˜๋ฌด๋Š” ์ž‘์•„์š”. (geu namuneun jagayo.) [normal] ๊ทธ ๋‚˜๋ฌด๋Š” ์ž‘์•„์š”. (geu namuneun jagayo.)
Eric: "The tree is small."
[pause]
Lyn: ๊ทธ ๋‚˜๋ฌด๋Š” ์ž‘์•„์š”. (geu namuneun jagayo.)
Eric: How do you say - "That apple is delicious." To give you a hint, "delicious" in Korean is..
Lyn: ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š” (masisseoyo). [slow] ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š” (masisseoyo). [normal] ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š” (masisseoyo).
Eric: โ€œThat apple is delicious.โ€
[pause]
Lyn: ๊ทธ ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋Š” ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š”. (geu sagwaneun masisseoyo.) [slow] ๊ทธ ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋Š” ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š”. (geu sagwaneun masisseoyo.) [normal] ๊ทธ ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋Š” ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š”. (geu sagwaneun masisseoyo.)
[pause]
Lyn: ๊ทธ ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋Š” ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š”. (geu sagwaneun masisseoyo.)
