INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 44. Apologizing Politely.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for apologizing in formal situations.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "I am truly sorry about the delay."
Jaehwi: 늦어서 정말 죄송합니다. (neujeoseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
Jaehwi: [slow] 늦어서 정말 죄송합니다. (neujeoseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
Dana: The pattern for apologizing in formal situations has two elements. First, we have the verb stem plus connective ending...
Jaehwi: 아서 (a seo) or 어서 (eo seo) or 여서 (yeo seo).
Jaehwi: In the sentence, it starts with 늦어서 (neujeoseo).
Dana: Second, the polite apology.
Jaehwi: 정말 죄송합니다 (jeongmal joesonghamnida).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "I am truly sorry about the delay."
Jaehwi: 늦어서 정말 죄송합니다. (neujeoseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
[slow] 늦어서 정말 죄송합니다. (neujeoseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
[normal] 늦어서 정말 죄송합니다. (neujeoseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
Dana: The phrase...
Jaehwi: 아서 (a seo) or 어서 (eo seo) or 여서 (yeo seo) plus 정말 죄송합니다(jeongmal joeosonghamnida)
Dana: ...is used to apologize politely in formal situations. You add this phrase to the verb stem to show how apologetic you are. It is used in business situations, when you want to apologize to someone who is your senior, or when you want to formally apologize to someone you are not familiar with. Or you can also simply say…
Jaehwi: 정말 죄송합니다(jeongmal joeosonghamnida).
Dana: So, again, "I am truly sorry about the delay" is...
Jaehwi: 늦어서 정말 죄송합니다. (neujeoseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
Dana: So remember, use this phrase when you wish to make a formal apology, or apologize in formal situations.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I am very sorry that I could not finish everything." First, we have the adverb…
Jaehwi: 다 (da)
Dana: plus a verb stem plus connective ending…
Jaehwi: 아서 (a seo) or 어서 (eo seo) or 여서 (yeo seo).
Dana: Altogether...
Jaehwi: 다 못해서 (da motaeseo).
Dana: Second, the polite apology.
Jaehwi: 정말 죄송합니다 (jeongmal joesonghamnida).
Dana: Altogether we have...
Jaehwi: 다 못해서 정말 죄송합니다. (da motaeseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
[slow] 다 못해서 정말 죄송합니다. (da motaeseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
[normal] 다 못해서 정말 죄송합니다. (da motaeseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
Dana: "I am very sorry that I could not finish everything."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 다 못해서 정말 죄송합니다. (da motaeseo jeongmal joesonghamnida.)
Dana: How do you say, "I am very sorry that I have to go first."? To give you a hint, "go first" is...
Jaehwi: 먼저 가다 (meonjeo gada). [slow] 먼저 가다 (meonjeo gada). [normal] 먼저 가다 (meonjeo gada).
Dana: "I am very sorry that I have to go first."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 먼저 가서 정말 죄송합니다. (meonjeo gaseo jeongmal joesonghamnida)
[slow] 먼저 가서 정말 죄송합니다. (meonjeo gaseo jeongmal joesonghamnida)
[normal] 먼저 가서 정말 죄송합니다. (meonjeo gaseo jeongmal joesonghamnida)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 먼저 가서 정말 죄송합니다. (meonjeo gaseo jeongmal joesonghamnida)
