INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 40. Expressing Uncertainty.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing possibility.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "I may come back again."
Jaehwi: 다시 올지도 몰라요. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Jaehwi: [slow] 다시 올지도 몰라요. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Dana: The pattern for expressing possibility has three elements. First, an adverb "again".
Jaehwi: 다시 (dasi).
Dana: Second, verb stem plus “may have to”
Jaehwi: ㄹ지도 (ljido) or 을지도 (euljido).
Jaehwi: 올지도 (oljido).
Dana: Third, polite tense of “do not know”.
Jaehwi: 몰라요 (mollayo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "I may come back again."
Jaehwi: 다시 올지도 몰라요. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
[slow] 다시 올지도 몰라요. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
[normal] 다시 올지도 몰라요. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Dana: We have the phrase...
Jaehwi: ㄹ지도 모르다 (ljido moreuda) or 을지도 모르다 (euljido moreuda)
Dana: You can use it when expressing possibility or uncertainty. You attach the phrase to the verb stem and use it at the end of a sentence. In the sample sentence, the adverb "later" is used, followed by the verb stem "come" and "may do"...
Jaehwi: ㄹ지도 모르다 (ljido moreuda) or 을지도 모르다 (euljido moreuda)
Dana: Altogether we have…
Jaehwi: 다시 올지도 몰라요. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Dana: So remember, use the phrase...
Jaehwi: ㄹ지도 모르다 (ljido moreuda) or 을지도 모르다 (euljido moreuda)
Dana: ...at the end of the sentence when you want to express possibility or uncertainty.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I may need to go to the hospital."
Dana: First, noun…
Jaehwi: 병원 (byeongwon)
Dana: plus the place marking particle.
Jaehwi: 에 (e).
Dana: Which together sound like
Jaehwi: 병원에 (byeongwone).
Dana: Second, the verb stem plus “may have to”
Jaehwi: ㄹ지도 (ljido) or 을지도 (euljido).
Dana: In this case, the verb-stem ends in a vowel, so you can use the first one and say…
Jaehwi: 갈지도 (galjido).
Dana: Third, polite tense of “do not know.”
Jaehwi: 몰라요 (mollayo).
Dana: Altogether we have...
Jaehwi: 병원에 갈지도 몰라요. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
[slow] 병원에 갈지도 몰라요. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
[normal] 병원에 갈지도 몰라요. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
Dana: "I may need to go to the hospital."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 병원에 갈지도 몰라요. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
Dana: How do you say, "I may go on a date."? To give you a hint, "date" is...
Jaehwi: 데이트 (deiteu). [slow] 데이트 (deiteu). [normal] 데이트 (deiteu).
Dana: "I may go on a date."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 데이트 할지도 몰라요. (deiteu haljido mollayo)
[slow] 데이트 할지도 몰라요. (deiteu haljido mollayo)
[normal] 데이트 할지도 몰라요. (deiteu haljido mollayo)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 데이트 할지도 몰라요. (deiteu haljido mollayo)
