INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 34 - Comparing Similar Objects.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for comparing two similar objects.
PATTERN
Dana: For example...
Dana: "He is as smart as his sister."
Jaehwi: 그 남자는 누나만큼 똑똑해요. (geu namjaneun nunamankeum ttokttokhaeyo)
Jaehwi: [slow] 그 남자는 누나만큼 똑똑해요. (geu namjaneun nunamankeum ttokttokhaeyo)
Dana: The pattern for comparing two similar objects has 4 elements. First, the demonstrative pronoun. In this case, it’s "that."
Jaehwi: 그 (geu).
Dana: Second, there’s the noun plus the topic marking particle…
Jaehwi: 는 (neun).
Jaehwi: 남자는 (namjaneun).
Dana: Third, the noun “older sister,” and the bound noun “as much as”.
Jaehwi: 누나만큼 (nunamankeum).
Dana: And last, the adjective “clever,” and the polite suffix “to do”.
Jaehwi: 똑똑해요 (ttokttokhaeyo).
Dana: All together, we have "He is as smart as his sister."
Jaehwi: 그 남자는 누나만큼 똑똑해요. (geu namjaneun nunamankeum ttokttokhaeyo) [slow]
그 남자는 누나만큼 똑똑해요. (geu namjaneun nunamankeum ttokttokhaeyo) [normal]
그 남자는 누나만큼 똑똑해요. (geu namjaneun nunamankeum ttokttokhaeyo)
Dana: This phrase is used when you are comparing two objects. You will usually start by using a demonstrative pronoun to indicate which object something is being compared with. You will follow up with the object of comparison, usually a noun with a topic marking particle attached. Afterward, you include the second object for comparison, a noun, followed by the comparative bound noun…
Jaehwi: 만큼 (mankeum) “as much as”
Dana: then the adjective used for comparison and the sentence ending.
Jaehwi: 그 남자는 누나만큼 똑똑해요. (geu namjaneun nunamankeum ttokttokhaeyo)
Dana: So remember,
Jaehwi: 만큼 (mankeum)
Dana: is used to compare two things.
Dana: Here is another example, meaning "This cake is as delicious as yours." First, there’s the demonstrative pronoun, "this.”
Jaehwi: 이 (i).
Dana: Second, you use the noun plus the topic marking particle…
Jaehwi: 는 (neun).
Jaehwi: 케이크는 (keikeuneun).
Dana: Third, there’s the pronoun “your,” the noun, and the bound noun.
Jaehwi: 네 것만큼 (ne geotmankeum).
Dana: And last, you use the adjective “delicious.”
Jaehwi: 맛있어 (massiseo).
Dana: All together, we have...
Jaehwi: 이 케이크는 네 것만큼 맛있어. (i keikeuneun ne geotmankeum massisseo) [slow] 이 케이크는 네 것만큼 맛있어. (i keikeuneun ne geotmankeum massisseo) [normal] 이 케이크는 네 것만큼 맛있어. (i keikeuneun ne geotmankeum massisseo)
Dana: "This cake is as delicious as yours."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 이 케이크는 네 것만큼 맛있어. (i keikeuneun ne geotmankeum massisseo)
Dana: How do you say "This jacket is as warm as that coat"? To give you a hint, "warm" is...
Jaehwi: 따뜻해요 (ttatteuthaeyo). [slow] 따뜻해요 (ttatteuthaeyo). [normal] 따뜻해요 (ttatteuthaeyo).
Dana: "This jacket is as warm as that coat."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 이 자켓은 그 코트만큼 따뜻해요. (i jakeseun geu koteumankeum ttatteuthaeyo) [slow] 이 자켓은 그 코트만큼 따뜻해요. (i jakeseun geu koteumankeum ttatteuthaeyo) [normal] 이 자켓은 그 코트만큼 따뜻해요. (i jakeseun geu koteumankeum ttatteuthaeyo)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 이 자켓은 그 코트만큼 따뜻해요. (i jakeseun geu koteumankeum ttatteuthaeyo)
