| Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for giving advice. |
| PATTERN |
| Dana: For example... |
| Dana: "I would recommend that you move to another apartment." |
| Jaehwi: 다른 아파트로 이사하는게 좋겠어요. (dareun apateuro issahaneunge jokkesseoyo.) |
| Jaehwi: [slow] 다른 아파트로 이사하는게 좋겠어요. (dareun apateuro issahaneunge jokkesseoyo.) |
| Dana: The pattern for giving advice has 4 elements. First, there’s the determiner. |
| Jaehwi: 다른 (dareun). |
| Dana: Second, the noun plus the case particle… |
| Jaehwi: 로(ro). |
| Jaehwi: 아파트로 (apateuro). |
| Dana: Third, the verb stem. |
| Jaehwi: 이사하 (isaha). |
| Dana: And last, the advice phrase “be better to do~”. |
| Jaehwi: 는게 좋겠어요 (neunge jokkesseoyo). |
| Dana: All together, we have "I would recommend that you move to another apartment." |
| Jaehwi: 다른 아파트로 이사하는게 좋겠어요. (dareun apateuro issahaneunge jokkesseoyo.) [slow] 다른 아파트로 이사하는게 좋겠어요. (dareun apateuro issahaneunge jokkesseoyo.) [normal] 다른 아파트로 이사하는게 좋겠어요. (dareun apateuro issahaneunge jokkesseoyo.) |
| Dana: You start with a determiner and a noun, followed by the case particle… |
| Jaehwi: 로(ro) |
| Dana: to indicate where you will be “moving.” Then, you follow it with the verb stem plus the phrase… |
| Jaehwi: 는게 좋겠어요 (neunge jokkesseoyo), |
| Dana: which is used when giving advice. |
| Jaehwi: 다른 아파트로 이사하는게 좋겠어요. (dareun apateuro issahaneunge jokkesseoyo.) |
| Dana: So remember, you use this phrase when you are offering advice in a polite manner. |
| Dana: Here is another example, meaning "I would recommend that you do your homework right away" First, use the noun plus the object marking particle… |
| Jaehwi: 를 (reul). |
| Jaehwi: 숙제를 (sukjereul). |
| Dana: Second, say the adverb. |
| Jaehwi: 바로 (baro). |
| Dana: Third, add the verb stem. |
| Jaehwi: 공부하 (gongbuha). |
| Dana: And last, use the advice phrase “be better to do~.” |
| Jaehwi: 는게 좋겠어요 (neunge jokkesseoyo). |
| Dana: All together, we have... |
