INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 30 - Introducing a New Topic.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for changing the subject.
PATTERN
Dana: For example...
Dana: "By the way, how old are you?"
Jaehwi: 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?)
Jaehwi: [slow] 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?)
Dana: The pattern for changing the subject has 3 elements. First, there’s the conjunctive phrase.
Jaehwi: 그런데 (geureonde).
Dana: Second, the noun numeric phrase + bound noun
Jaehwi: 몇 살 (myeot sal).
Dana: Third, the copula.
Jaehwi: 이세요 (iseyo).
Dana: All together, we have "By the way, how old are you?"
Jaehwi: 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?) [slow] 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?) [normal] 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?)
Dana: You will need to change the subject by starting the sentence with…
Jaehwi: 그런데 (geureonde).
Dana: Then, you can follow with a sentence that may be completely different than the topic you had been discussing previously. If you wanted to change the subject by asking someone's name, you would add the noun myeot meaning “how much,” or “how old,” followed by the bound noun “sal”, meaning “age”, then end with polite form of the positive copula
Jaehwi: 이다 (ida), which is 이세요 (iseyo).
Jaehwi: 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?)
Dana: So remember, just start the sentence with…
Jaehwi: 그런데 (geureonde).
Dana: if you want to change the subject.
Dana: Here’s another example, meaning "By the way, are you free?" First, use the conjunctive phrase.
Jaehwi: 그런데 (geureonde).
Dana: Second, add the noun.
Jaehwi: 시간 (sigan).
Dana: Third, add the copula.
Jaehwi: 있어요 (isseuseyo).
Dana: All together, we have...
Jaehwi: 그런데, 시간 있어요? (geureonde, sigan isseoyo) [slow] 그런데, 시간 있어요? (geureonde, sigan isseoyo) [normal] 그런데, 시간 있어요? (geureonde, sigan isseoyo)
Dana: "By the way, are you free?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 그런데, 시간 있어요? (geureonde, sigan isseoyo)
Dana: How do you say "By the way, where is the bathroom"? To give you a hint, "bathroom" is...
Jaehwi: 화장실 (hwajangsil). [slow] 화장실 (hwajangsil). [normal] 화장실 (hwajangsil).
Dana: "By the way, where is the bathroom?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 그런데, 화장실은 어디예요? (geureonde, hwajangsileun eodiyeyo?) [slow] 그런데, 화장실은 어디예요? (geureonde, hwajangsileun eodiyeyo?) [normal] 그런데, 화장실은 어디예요? (geureonde, hwajangsileun eodiyeyo?)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 그런데, 화장실은 어디예요? (geureonde, hwajangsileun eodiyeyo?)
REVIEW
Dana: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I'll tell you the English equivalent of the phrase and you say it in Korean. Here we go.

[pause]
Jaehwi: 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?)

Outro

Dana: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for changing the subject, as in...
Jaehwi: 그런데, 몇 살이세요? (geureonde, myeot sal iseyo?)
Dana: ...meaning "By the way, how old are you?"
Dana: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out at KoreanClass101.com. Thanks, everyone, and see you next time!
Jaehwi: 그럼 다음 시간에 만나요! (Geureom daeum sigane mannayo!).
